i use a sb live! and i dont really notice a big diff between eax and no eax unless i listen really closely to the echoes...i sometimes just turn it off for performance
PLus X-Fi has this CMSS technology to make headphones sound more 3D, and a 24-bit crystalizer that makes compressed MP3 sounds seem like uncompressed CD quality.
CMSS is available on all Audigy series cards as well, not just the X-Fi.
I'm running an X-Fi Xtreme Music on a Logitech Z-5300 5.1 speaker system (or my LTB Platinum 5.1 headphones when I need to be quiet).
Running BF2 in X-Fi and Ultra High audio mode.
I can hear artillery being fired from a fair distance...couple that with a recently capped flag = MOVE, SOLDIER!
I can hear vehicles and armor LONG before they get close.
I can hear snipers from quite a fair distance..couple that with the 5.1 positional audio and I can find 'em every time...even while piloting an attack chopper (my copilot is always amazed)
I can hear footsteps and can even tell if they are in the same room or on the other side of a wall.
If I hear enemy radio chatter with a little echo, I can tell it's coming from within the building or hangar.
BF2 is a GREAT aural experience
