I actually did this by accident a few weeks ago. Seems like something they forgot to finish, or forgot to take out.

if it lets you pick what rank you wanna be....say you pick gunnery sergant when your only a corpral.....wont people still see youe only got 500 team work points, 1000 or so kills and 1500 deaths or something and only 4000 in your global score?

it doesnt let you choose the rank i think it just shows from left to right, previous rank, current rank, next rank. in the screenshot his next rank is master gunnery sergeant

Yeah, it was just a progress bar to your upcoming ranks. If you ever have to reinstall BF2 before you install the patch I bet you can still do it.
