    BF2 & RAM ~ Killing my resources!

Ok, so I am wondering if anyone has any insight on this issue. Or if it is just the way it's supposed to be. I am running patch 1.1.2696-528.0 which I belive is the latest patch no? Also XP SP2.

I have 2x1GB of OCZ Platinum DDR400 that run @ their recommended speed of 2-3-2-5 @ 1T. The rest of my gear is listed in my sig. Now when I load up BF2, and am just in the menu if I alt-tab out to the desktop & check task manager I have 160,000 free memory... but as soon as I drop into the map (single or online) it is dropping to only 70,000 free memory! The only other thing running @ the time is my Zone Alarm Security Suite.

I am running 1280x w/ all High AAx4 settings... but even when I drop it down to Med/Low settings I still have only 90,000 free.

I am not having any/minimal lag issues, and I am almost always the first player into a map... but I just think its a little strange that the game is using so much memory. I am suspect to a possible virus/spyware issue but have done extensive scans with little result. I have cleared out my BF2 cache & uninstalled/reinstalled my video drivers, 81.98, with no difference.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I have to give this one bump, then I'll let it die... this issue really has me confused.

    Thanks!

Hmm, I only have 1.5gb ram and BF2 only starts stuttering (using HD instead of ram) after a good few hours (usually about 4) of gaming. When the game starts to stutter I alt tabbed out and saw BF2 using 999,999+mb of ram all by itself

I usually end all non essential gaming processes before starting BF2, all antivirus, firewall (kinda pointless when your behind a router anyway), logitech keyboard drivers (caused the first patch to crash the game), mouse options drivers, VMWare processes etc. also renaming all the games movies *.bik to *.bik.old increased the time which I could play before the horrible stuttering began at the start of levels

Maybe BF2 doesn't clear memory after its finished with one map and just keeps it all in memory, when I start BF2, it's only using about 400mb of RAM, which slowly increases to over 1gb after a few hours

its huge maps, lots of textures, it uses a bunch of RAM is the simple answer

BF2 is a memory monster. Myself and all of my colleagues all had to upgrade from 1 to 2 GB with this game. On 1 GB the hard disk was caching like crazy and task switching took ages. So did closing the game down not to mention loading levels between maps.

Sounds about right bf2 nails memory, if you're the first person on the maps and you don't get ten minutes of stuttering while all the textures are loaded into memory or any other performance issues i wouldn't worry. :)

Thanks for all the replies :)

Yeah I don't mean to whine about this issue, but doesn't it seem a little ridiculous to go from 1750000 of memory to 75000... and on top of that I noticed that I am using over a GB of my page file as well! Thats just insane!
