X-Fi Problems

I just got an X-Fi today in the mail, works fine. Except when I tried putting the sound into the X-Fi & Ultra High quality, it crashes to the desktop as soon as I hit apply. I went with the XtremeMusic version of the X-Fi, which doesn't seem to sport the X-Ram, so I figured that was what the problem was. So I was wondering if that really is the problem, because I went with the cheaper version of the X-Fi. So what do you guys think?

Make sure you update the drivers.

^^ what he said, I had the same, but I have the Fatal1ty. I updated drivers and it worked fine after that. P.S this should have been posted in the hardware support thread.

Be sure it is in Game Mode when you are setting the sound to ulta-high too.

Yep, I forgot that I installed the drivers from the website, and then I went to the CD and installed everything, trying to find the right applications. So I think it re-installed the older drivers.

But with the drivers from the CD or any older drivers, will make Bf2 crash?
And the X-Fi that I'm using should be compatible with BF2?

install the cd drivers/apps first... then the update from the website.

Yes I have the same card and it works great. But as RingMasTeR says make sure you have it in "Game Mode" otherwise bad things happen...

Yep, put it in Game Mode the first time I went to the control panel.

Oh yeah, almost forgot.
I was having another issue, not sure if it's possible for the X-Fi.

But I liked how I had my onboard sound setup.

I could customize what the ports would do, either input or output. So I had my little stereo system hooked up to it, and 3 headphones and a mic hooked up. I like the way it worked.

So I tried to get just my stereo system to work which is just a basic 2 channel set of speakers... and my headphones. I can't figure out how to get them to do both outputs without being in 'surround sound' which doesnt work that well :p
But is there any way of doing this?
I'm probably going to stop at Wal-Mart when I go home and pick up a Y adapter for the output port. Not sure how well that will work though.

Moved to support.

I had the same problem with my X-Fi...updating the drivers and then deleting the contents of my BF2 subfolder in My Documents did the trick.

Here is the issue with BF2 and X-FI.

BF2 copies an OpenAL file, and a wrapper file to windows/system32 directory when you install it(which is why it needs a reboot after install, fyi). Those files are incompatible with the X-Fi. When you update the X-fi drivers, it writes over those files with x-fi compatible files.

You don't have to update your drivers so much as repair the damage the bf2 installer does to your computer.

Roger guys, I got it. Works perfect after the drivers were updated. Sounds pretty good. Pairing it with a pair of Sennheiser HD280's.
Pretty good match for a guy who's not an audiophile.
