What is modding?

Well I have been a member of these forums for about a month now and I have been reading all the threads and stuff about modding and it seems pretty interesting and fun to do. I was just wanting to know what modding exactly is and how to do it and do you need any software etc. It would be great if someone could help me out with this stuff and answer my questions.

To Modify is to alter or change in some way, so basically modding is changing aspects of the game (In singleplayer- Multiplayer changes are illegal). Common mods are changing how many tickets a singleplayer battle has, changing the number of bots a singleplayer game has, changing the skins of vehicles, and aspects of weapons. No software is needed (except for skins and making custom maps).

You best bet would be to help out with another mod to get some experience. To start your own mod you need a strong idea of exactly what you want to do and you need the focus to see it all the way through. I'm not saying you don't have that focus but getting some experience with another mod will tell you exactly if making a mod is right for you.

I really dont have any experience with mods, im just trying to learn things about it.

Yes, I just joined the mod hosting the site (which will be up in a day or two) and we just set the forums up yesterday.
