Hey ... weapon unlocks? (newb)

Hey guys! sweet website you have

I bought BF 2 two days ago and i love the game, i got promoted to corporal rank and had 1 weapon unlock, so i took the medic one. Now, i hear all these stuff about you need SF to unlock new weapons and its getting me freaking confused. so i got a few questions :

1. Are weapon unlocks available every 1000 points or every time you get promoted?
2. the second set of weapons, are those the SF ones or you just need to play alot to get em???

id greatly appreciate if someone can explain me clearly ... thanks guys

1. Every time you get promoted
2. The so-called "Tier 2" unlocks; you must play SF to get them. (1 round is enough)
