after about 30 minutes in SF my game drops to about 5 frames per second and then eventually crashes.. i've already overruled heat as being the factor... my specs are Amd 64 3800, geforce 6800 gt and 1 gig of ram on windows xp pro..

I have noticed this since the patch but I can't confirm. I "personally" suspect there is a memory leak introduced in the 1.2 patch similar to the one released in the 1.1 patch.
EDIT
My solution is to alt/tab to the desktop and after returning to game, all is smoothed out.

I had the same problem (and a few more problems), but I fixed all of them by reformatting and re-installing windows. If this isn't an option for you, try completely removing BF2 and punkbuster then running a registry cleaner (regcleanr is a free one) and maybe that will fix it.
