The Second (First) Coming of Infantry Tactics to BF2

Small goofs aside, let's look at a few facts that have become reality since 1.2.
    1. Infantry support guns (LMGs) are to be respected. They are wonderfully effective at covering fields of fire when the operator is prone.
    2. The ability for a single soldier to run into the open and avoid death by dolphin diving etc. has been reduced. Players can no longer ignore the benefits of cover in favor of controlled open-air spasms.
    3. One easy and all-to-common means to destroy an entire squad, the C4 chuck, is all but dead.
    4. The UAV, another training wheel, has been balanced by making it destructible, thereby offering troops the opportunity to safeguard their own movements and stealth - at least more than they could before
    5. Infantry battles are slower overall, as fronts ebb and flow. This contrasts the previous clusterfvcks where everyone would just mix together and hop around setting off C4 or GLs.
    6. AT players are now far more responsible for protecting their team from tanks/armor than ever before.

What does it all mean? It means that your squad just became a lot more important to your survival. It means that the guy standing next to you, whether AT or Support or Medic or whatever, is just as important to your success as you are, if not moreso in certain situations. It means that, now, choosing a kit is more about choosing a role and responsibility in your squad - not just changing the icon next to your name on the scoreboard.

My cohorts and I are going to be reading up on ways that we can move more effectively, cover each other and bring a little more intelligence to a battlefield that finally rewards you for it.

As such, here are some primers on infantry tactics, including the previously posted "Lessons learned" document from the US' work in Iraq. The third link offers an introduction to German infantry tactics in WWII. It's a book that you'll have to buy/find, but I've included it because of the cornerstone of Germany's philosophy was the light machine gun, which (if you note above) has just become a whole hell of a lot more important in BF2.

If you don't have any friends in BF2, now might be a good time to start remembering who you worked well with - the best thing you can do is get a squad's worth of guys together to become your little band of brothers. At the very least you'll have more fun, and at most you'll become clockwork ass-kickers.

I figured it might help for someone to present these ideas. I think we're all a littke off-balance trying to reconcile the 1.12 world with the 1.2 world.

Any other resources are appreciated. Stupid comments, while always entertaining, are not.

I'd agree with you except as of right now, teamplay is taking a backseat while the majority of the team takes up a sniper rifle. Hopefully this facination with sniping subsides a little and everyone gets back to fighting the battles in the streets.

You are right though, tactics have changed and it is nice to see some more support guys around provided they remember to supply the rest of us as we're moving along. We AT'ers aren't much good if we run out of ammo and the support guys are too busy laughing hysterically while shooting the crap out of the other team.

Even a team of 4 snipers covering each other, 2 by 2, would be pretty cool/effective. And imagine the claymores they could set up at a flag!

I wish it was just 4 snipers. I played a round on Wake Island earlier today and on 1 tip of the island I counted 6. It was actually comical seeing them all lined up beside each other. Last night was ridiculous though when on Mashtuur city there were 10 on my team in a 48 player server. Not sure how many on the other side, but by the amount of times I was hit, it felt like more.

Karkand should be a real treat trying to dodge all those claymores.

With the sniper rifle being more deadly this time around. I'm thinking of considering of including a Sniper in our squad to at least counter the snipers that surround the flag while rushing it.

Before I was able to out run sniper fire with getting hit once and not die. But this time around, it's either I get shot and my health goes all red, or they just drop me when I pop my head out.

Pretty exciting and a little bit frustrating since you don't know where you get shot from most of the time.

Excellent OP.. This new patch is going to be great for teamwork...

I have already been a part of some great front line fire fights... I am talking bullets flying; AT missles screaming past your head, grenades bursting all over the place; vehicles moving and firing through the lines of defense. Soldiers screaming for ammo or medics.. WOO !!!!! Makes the blood pump....

The thing with this patch I notices is that if you work with a good squad that sticks together, is vocal and attentive or a squad leader that knows whats up and that gets his troops in order you all with achieve a good score in the 50s if not more. Shoot since I hooked up with a player that goes by the name Death-Vow i have avg. about 55-60 points with a high of 77 working as a team not on my own.

And that was just using a public pick-up game and a squad full of strangers. :)

Thanks for the guides bro, people definately need to read up on them, myself included!

In all due time the AA whoring will cool down, and people will figure out that working with real tactics in squads will rack up the kills nicely.

I played CS for about 6 or 7 years, got pretty good while playing with friends and ex RL swat members. They showed us how to use real tactics and goddamnit they worked beautifuly. All in due time my friends, all in due time we will all realize these points.

                          Take care everyone.
