    The magic missile!

Whether or not I agree with the change in the AA missiles, I can't say anything definate so soon. But sometimes I wonder, what the hell were those programmers thinking when they recoded them?!

Last night, after I had just released my flares, I watched as they slowly flew down towards the ocean. Now, seeing the missiles following them would be normal; what isn't normal is seeing the missile following them in this path:

    /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/-> *

where the /\/ was the contrail, -> the missile, and * was the flare.

And this wasn't just some little bumps in the contrail. I'm talking about each up-down motion being at least 1 story high and each was done in the horizontal space of about 3m (the tips were nearly touching each other). I couldn't do anything but laugh histerically at how this missile was moving in such an impossible manner.

Whaaaa. I want the missiles to fly beautifully
Also the player models look ugly. I want to play with a MEC guy that looks like Patrick Swayze

I dont think it's relevant what kind of path they take .. as funny as it might look sometimes. The relevant thing is how many percent of the missiles hit. Sorry to be such a joykiller.

Also the TVG missiles make sharp angles in the air (actually it only looks like that) and this is mostly because the missile flys very fast and the "waypoints" it flies through get registered with relatively long intervals because of the latency between the client and the server.

Hmm I haven't noticed that, I'll keep an eye out for it. Very weird...

What you will notice is getting shot down by a missile fired at you by a aircraft passing at 90 degree angle from you. I've seen some amazing missiles shots from both the sending and receiving ends.

I noticed the missiles swerving all over, but they do work MUCH better.

Back..and to the left. And to the right again. And back to the left. Forward, back, then to the left...

Oh crap, the missle just went up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, then pressed B and A. It's now got infinite lives! RUN!

And therein lies the problem. How come the chance of a missile hitting does not change when the object has to make more than one of these kinds of turns? How can they detect an object well out of the FOV and make this sort of turn (multiple times) to hit it? Don't these things have limits on how far they can turn? If the main problem was, and by the looks of how they behave, having the missile manually hit the small hitbox, why not make it proximity based with a cone of fire? How hard would it have been to give it just a few more variables saying that if a new target is chosen, decrease the current variables such as speed/turn rates/etc? It would have essentially been in the same vain as having the guns accuracy decrease the longer the fire button is held down. But instead we have these monstrosities that can do obsurd maneuvers to hit an object that will retarget someone that was behind you when you fired the missile.

When you get a missile like that on your ass it WILL hit whatever it's following (flare, helicopter, airplane). The missile tracks the exact position of the heat source and alters it's position to match.
These types of missiles existed before 1.2 and those where the only ones that hit a target.

All fine and dandy if it were to do these things within reason.

                  Reasonable:
*getting hit after not dropping flares (also, maybe getting hit 1/3 the time after dropping flares, which does happen)
*having your missile choose a new target that is in the current general direction as the origional target
*having a possibility that the missile will NOT hit its target after having to make a drastic change to its course
*having a decreased chance of getting hit with good maneuvering (which does happen every so often)

                  Unreasonable:
*Having a missile reaquire a target that was nowhere close to the general direction the missile was flying while chasing the origional target
*Making a 90 degree turn to chase this new target
*Being able to keep the insane acrobatic qualities it did with its first target after switching to a new one.
*somehow finding a hotter target 100m away rather than the firey thruster of the plane 10m away from its nose

The only real problem I have with these missiles is how they change targets with impossible turns and retain their accuracy, NOT how they can track down a target doing loops and not dropping flares.

lol you should watch the intro video some time, watch the missile they fire at the chopper. And that's a prerendered video!

Once the shooting starts its an ingame video with post-production touchups and editing as was stated when the same video was originally released before BF2 came out

That made me laugh out loud, so true, and yet really really sad at the same time.

And from the sounds of things, they tend to have big knobs in the pilot's seat, too.

I was doing some air to air combat on wake last night and saw that. The missiles did the /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ thing and it hit the J-10 THRUSTER nozzel first at a 45 degree angle... That was weird to see a rocket fly perfectly fine lopside and hit a J-10 making a sharp turn.
