The New Patch From A Pilot's prospective.

My Thoughts on the v1.2 patch as to Fixed-Wing Air.

I'm a Pilot and I love to fly both the bombers and fighters, but I'm an SU-34 & SU-30 whore, and have enjoyed owning all the ground grunts, including Armor of course. I really don't mine the new much improved Stinger AA, It is something that was needed. It did not take me long to learn a new work around for the new AA and punish the little guy manning the position. A Pilot now had better know where every stationary AA is located, and be able to tell the difference between AA and air to air threats. Why DICE did not use two different warning sounds for Ground AA and Air to Air is beyond me. As for mobile AA, well they can still be evaded but it's not easy, and chances are your going to get hit at least once. Once you know where a mobile AA is you have two choices, load up on bombs and hit it from straight down attack or just stay away from that area. All in all I'm all for the Ground based AA improvements.

Now for my thoughts on air to air. At first I kind of liked the new missile physics, I was one who bitched about how worthless they were before. However after a couple of hours flying I learned some things.
    1) Any Newbie who is lucky enough to find himself on the tail of a good pilot can hit quite good with missiles now. A good pilot can kill you quicker than ever before.
    2) From what I have seen of the missiles after only a couple of hours flying is kind of weird at best. If a pilot makes slow Newbie turns and evasive moves the missiles seem to have a hard time hitting the target. However if your on the tail of a fast experienced Pilot the missiles seem to lock and stay till it gets a hit. Plus they also seem to hit even on angles that seem impossible. I made kills on good Pilots with missiles that absolutely blew my mine, and was killed by good pilots while making moves that before the patch would not even come close to hitting me. So, it seems to me that the better you are at flying the better chance you have of being hit by another aircraft's missiles.
    3) In Gulf of Oman with several AA missiles positions manned and enemy air also up you can't fly anywhere without being lit up and the warning buzzer staying on full time. Not being able to tell if your target by Air or Ground makes for a rough day in the air. The best defence against me is to have every Ground AA manned at all times, and if they don't get me a smart Pilot will. However, that Enemy Pilot is just as vulnerable to his own Ground Based AA missiles as I am, if not more. Zata Wetlands, my Wing-Man and myself were both shot down over the center Island Flag by our own friendly AA at the same time. This can be a major problem for both sides, especially on a Pub server where the noobs don't have a clue.

OK, what do I think of the new Patch from a Pilots prospective? The new Ground based AA is ok by me, the ground units needed more reliable protection. However I feel DICE swung the pendulum to far in the other direction when it comes to Air to Air. Skill is required in air to air and from what I have seen so far that has been reduced by the new missile physics. It would sure help and even balance the air better if there were two different warning sounds for Air and Ground lock on's.

Only time will tell how this new patch will work out on all fronts including aircraft. Before I really start moaning and crying I will have to play many more hours to see if I can find new ways to prevail in the air.

I would love to hear other Pilots thoughts on the new Patch.

I love the way DICE buffed the AA missiles, it benefits both pilots and infantry on ground.

Bama that was a great report!!!!

I think on #2 you are absolutely correct on the missles, when someones on my six Im flying in "chase rear" for 90% of the time and have witnessed the more evasive the manuever the more likely you will die...Im mentioned here earlier that simple jinks may be very helpful, its going to take alot more hours before I make a final decision.I have evaded 3-4 over 30-45 second engagements on my six to this point and know it is possible, how did I do it Im still not sure of but I will figure it out.

I also think that some maps will be much harder on pilots than others, the skill level is going to be on the rise thats a fact!

        Oh yeah Roll Tide!!

As I said in the other thread, there is no skill in firing an AT missile or TOW, none in firing a .50-cal at an attack chopper, so what exactly is your point?

As with all of them, the skill is in picking a time to do it where you're not gonna get blasted immediately. Good pilots will strafe/bomb the stinger sites before they ever get their first lock. They come in, bomb, and get out, never leaving enough time for anything else to get a lock. They listen to their teammates' aircraft calls and take them out first.

The bad pilots sit back and whine that they're no longer invincible when they fly over 4 stinger sites.

I dunno about you, but I could tell from the first day that the way AA was SUPPOSED to work, was that if you got painted, you had to dump flares and then either get out of lock range or take out the AA, otherwise you would be shot down. Parking in an AA's lock was SUPPOSED to be a death wish. Same way sitting in front of a TOW instead of shooting it or popping smoke and getting out of the way is. Having an enemy AA vehicle called was supposed to make pilots take notice and go out of their way to make sure it died first.

The difference is, now that stuff's actually happening, and the big irony is that the people complaining that it takes no skill simply lack the skill to handle it.

            realism, it's all increased realism.

When you do manuvers, you tend to use afterburner, and that increases the locking force.

I've noticed that 99% of pilots I flew against (yesterday) started evasive action AFTER lock was obtained. It was too late, of course. I shot down quite a lot of planes.

No wonder they cry and scream. They got used to being invincible.

I start evading now as soon as I hear the locking sound (and check my back, etc), and I was rarely fully locked. Got shot down 10 times (both ground AA and plane missiles), while making 40-45 kills. Damn snapshots don't work anymore for me, so don't have exact figure (thought SSs would remain on hard disk, but they're nowhere to be found, and printscreen doesn't "hang" the game for moment, as it used to do before, when taking screenshots - sigh).

Now planes and PKMs can have similar K/D ratios, it seems

It is possible to "partially" evade AA sites, even when they lock you and shoot missiles at you. With "partially" I mean that I was hit with missiles (2 at a time), but they'd take 60-80% of plane health, would not kill me (as if they hit wing or something close, but not engine directly). But you really have to keep making hard turns from the moment lock is obtain, there is no way to fly straight or in 'wide turns' in order to evade them.

Love the patch. Pilots now need to work hard to stay alive, which is a good thing.

Re: The New Patch From A Pilot's prospective.

My god! This must be the oasis of mature pilots in the 1.2 sea of tears. I really do (not) feel sorry for pilots who can no longer go 40+ kills in a round with 1 or 0 deaths. Conversely, pilots who can still go 40+ kills in a round with 1 or 0 deaths, get their legitimate "Badass Jetjockey" badge from me.
I've encountered several very good pilots who do more than just mindlessly bomb for points, and I have yet to see those pilots crying about the changes.

AA is still not perfect, nor should it be. And in all it's "overpowered" goodness, I watched pilots routinely waste guys before they could get a shot off. Those improved AA missles can't do $@^# if the op is dead and/or the site is destroyed. Guess you'll just have to use those bombs for more than easy kills, eh?

Besides, if you're in a jet, and you approach an island with several occupied AA batteries that are spread out, don't expect to last long. Sorry, mates. Now you know what it's like to be the lone infantryman trying to escape the wrath of a rampaging T-90.

Not everyone gets to be an astronaut. Someone has to make the fries.

I LOVE IT- it is now a much easier task taking down other aircraft, and the ESSEX aa is now a force to be reckoned with. You come near it and you see a wall of fire and missiled coming at you.. ahh i love it. Now you cant just fly around without worying about anything. You have to be very carefull!

Re: The New Patch From A Pilot's prospective.

Im no pilot..Check my stats i think my k/d is like 0.4 pre patch (yea terrible) but to counter the air-air missle wouldn't the pilots just work more as a team. The bomber goes first and the fighter stays a ways back watching his six and taking out anyone trying to obtain lock. Like I said I am no pilot but would that work? Also wouldn't the co-pilot be required to be watching the bombers six and letting him know where the other pilots are?

On a side note: The saturday before the patch came out I made friends with a good pilot (I am a fairly good co-pilot..Well I guess who isn't right) and he helped my get my aerial service ribbon but guess what it did not update..So I got screwed of the one ribbon I was working 4 months for.The reason I am telling you guys this is if someone needs a co-pilot please PM me as I really want this ribbon and I would really appreciate the help. I do not imagine it would take that long cause it only toke me one round on a low population 64 player map to get before. Thanks in adavance..

Several of you Guys seem to have a problem reading. No one here was crying about the missiles both on the ground or in the air. In fact I was phrasing the the much improved effectiveness of the ground AA missiles. The only thing I see is a bug in the air to air, and I say bug because when you can shoot down another Aircraft that is passing you at a 90 degree angle that is a bug my friend.

If I were you I would not get to excited yet, because it will not take good pilots long to learn the work around's to kill the crap of you at will.

I often fly in formation withother clan mates, 2 j10s realy realy can do alot of damage. and one can distract while the other decimates.

Definitely. Now you really seriously consider things before haphazardly approaching the carrier. Lower armor and better missle lock make the carrier's defense frighteningly effective.

                            > I often fly in formation withother clan mates, 2 j10s realy realy can do alot of damage. and one can distract while the other decimates.

Good lord, I got tailed by a pair of J-10s on Wake Island the other day (pre-patch), and got tore the hell up. Peeked back just in time to watch them peel off, still in formation, and go tear some helo a new one.

                            > and I say bug because when you can shoot down another Aircraft that is passing you at a 90 degree angle that is a bug my friend.

So far, I haven't managed to tag an enemy at the 90 degree angle, but I did have a friendly jet fly up perpendicular to me to steal missle aggro.

and therein lies the problem with the jet - jockey mentality. get out of the plane and fight. let that juicy k/d ratio drop.
