So I finally patched BF2 to 1.2, and was anxious to test these new AA missiles some players have either been lamenting or revering about. Indeed, the hype got me excited, AA missiles that actually work! The challenge going against SAM weapons, acquiring the "first" shot in dogfights, and being able to shoot down aircrafts with ease in a server with 150 ping got me excited.
BF2 started and up and I created single-player round on Operation Cleansweep first. When a patch arrives, I always start on single-player so the shader's optimization process can be completed faster by skipping "Data verification."
The map loaded, and I joined MEC to use the Tunguska. I proceeded to the coastline to have a good view of any incoming UH-60 or the F-15. Let's skip the whole story and get to the results:
Face off 1: F-15 was shot down by Su-34; I shot down the Su-34 to end further disturbance in this experiment.
Face off 2: F-15 came directly in front of me; Fired missile; missile bypasses under the target. This got me severely disappointed, I expected the missiles to hit the aircraft.
Face off 3: F-15 flies perpendicular in front of my view; Shot down the F-15; I was impressed of how smooth the missiles tracked and flew; I also noticed it tracked its body, not the tail as it was before.
Face off 4: So now I switch teams and fly the F-15. I intercept the Su-34 and again impressed how the missiles tracked and flew to the fuselage of the target.
Repeat this 3 times; the Su-34 actually shot me down once.
Now to multiplayer, I joined Kubra Dam, expected to get raped and beaten by Linebackers, Tunguskas, IGLA, Stingers, and fighter aircrafts. This was not the case, I played almost exactly the same before except I flew at much higher altitude. Out of 30 kills, I was shot down 2 times by enemy fire, one from F/A-18 and the other from a Linebacker. I also had 4 mid-air crashes T_T
The round restarts and I get almost the same result, one of the opposition gets ****ed at me. Nothing extraordinary.
Map changes: Gulf of Oman
This is where I test a solution against these AA sites. I'll only say that it is effective, but wasn't used much as it was not really needed.
This is where I had a lot of fun, I flew the Su-34 and bombed and gunned targets as usual. The difference was that I could actually shoot down fighters with missiles! Before, I couldn't dogfight using vulcans because of high ping (150), the missile was unreliable, and the idea of using a bomber against fighters was ridiculous. However, the new missiles changed all that, I simply needed to track these fighters at a good distance, and fire the missiles. I shot down 5 F-35Bs and 2 Mig-29s.
However, I discovered a latency bug/glitch. There were some points where my missiles no doubt hit the bogey, but did not register as a hit to the server. Annoying, but I cannot complain, these new missiles are a blessing to me.
As for enemy AA, I did not find them as a dangerous threat after the first quarter of the round, I dealt with them as usual: Vulcan the sites and bomb them if not destroyed. Possibly the only change is that I would destroy these AA sites before they were manned. I cannot remember the score, but it was over 20 kills with 1-2 deaths (all of them being accidents)
New round starts, I get switched to USMC due to autobalance.
Again had fun, flying style was almost the same as the last round mimicing the same effectiveness. Nothing extraordinary except I have took a screenshot of my score 3 minutes before the round ended:
This was the last round for me, I quit the game.
My conclusion on these AA missiles? I LOVE THEM! These missiles has actually made it possible for me to shoot down aircrafts in high ping servers! No more do I need to hide or evade bogeys during a dogfight showing wise cowardice. My lust for dogfighting in these servers has now rekindled.
