    BF2 Crashes After ~30mins

    Hi!

I've been having this problem for a while now, I patch and play BF2 but after a about 30 mins it will suddenly give me a black screen and then crash to desktop, no error messages, nothing. When I start BF2 up again I can happily get back in game but again it crashes after about 15 minutes, again no error messages. Basically it continues like that till the time I get actually online and playing is tiny. A restart 'resets the cycle'. Any ideas?

    Heres my Spec:
    AMD 3700+ San Diego @ 2.75GHz, 1024MB Corsair XMS TwinX @ 2-3-3-6 @ 1T, Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe, Leadtek nVidia 6600GT PCI-E 128mb, 2x80GB Hitachi Deskstar (Raid 0), Hiper Type-R 580W Modular PSU, X-Fi Xtreme Music, Gigabyte 3D Aurora Case (Twin Rear 120mm, Single 120mm intake), Zalman CNPS9500LED.

    Thanks

If your stated times are extremely consistent (within reason, of course), then it may be a heating problem. CPU (probably given your massive overclock), graphics card, or even the memory (though doubtful that) could be the culprit.

If you can, play with your case open and a portable fan blowing inside to see if you can play longer without crashing.

Seriously, though, with your CPU set to 2.75 GHz, it really just sounds like you have yet to find stability. :p

Stability isn't the problem, the overclock is big, but I've taken it a lot further, heat also isn't a problem, my Zalman CNPS9500LED keeps my CPU at about 27C idle 32C load. Its prefectly stable at 2.75, I can run everything hapiily, I've run loops of most of the CPU benchs and burn-ins for over 24 hours. I can run any game bar BF2 for as long as I want.

My BF2 1.2 also suddenly closed , by itself. No tempature overheat. It just "quit" :S

Yep thats the problem, it was actually worse today, was crashed out after only 20 mins.

It could be your hard drive (problem = page file, solution = add more memory). Before you scoff, hear my tale.

Like you apparently, I build my own systems and am a big stability freak, especially since I switched over to AMD a few years ago. I don't consider my system "rock solid stable" until three criteria are met:
            1. Run Memtest86+ for 24 hours; and
            2. Run Prime 95 for 72 hours;
            3. Run 3DMark®05 in a demo loop (requires purchase) for 8 hours.

So with all of the above met, you can imagine that I, too, am pretty confident about the stability of my system, yet baffled I was why BF2 keep crashing on me every 1-3 hours.

Originally, I just chalked it up to buggy code on the part of DICE, but a couple of months ago, to remove the in-game lag, I upgraded my 1024MB Corsair XMS TwinX sticks (yes, same as yours) to their 2 GB equivalents.

The lag disappeared, but guess what else? Since the memory increase, I have yet to have BF2 crash on me once, and I play 2-6 hours a day!

Recap: For six straight months, my very stable system crashed every hour or two when playing BF2. For two months now after increasing my memory, I haven't had a single crash. Go figure.

My only conclusion is that with the heavy page file usage with my 1 GB of RAM, the chances for some bits were getting flipped randomly (not as uncommon as people think) increased dramatically, and since I have my page file on a Raid 0 array, my chances are doubled. With the extra memory, the page file (i.e., hard drive) is much less of a factor.

So am I claiming that you have a buggy hard drive? No, of course not. I'm only offering you my personal experience which may or may not be relevant.

So before you shell out $200 for some better TwinX sticks, maybe you can try moving your page file to another drive and see what happens? <shrug>

UPDATE: Right I tried fiddling round with my pagefile and got some improvement, I've raised my RAM voltage and reduced the overclocking. I've run lots of diagnostics on my RAID array and I'm about to give BF2 another shot.

Okay, at the moment there seems to have been a very nice improvement, I still get crashed out however it doesn't happen for about an hour and a half. Will look into getting 2GB of ram...
