BF 1.2 Patch: The Myth and the Reality

After the patch I spent a little time online testing out the new but controversial AA enhancements and aircraft armor reduction. Let me state that this is only my opinion and experience from playing. My evaluation comes from playing several online matches in Gulf of Oman and Wake Island 2007 (two very air dominant maps).
    1. AA positions are not the “end to all air”. The AA missiles are significantly better in tracking and taking down aircrafts with little or no incidental team damage from wayward missiles.
    2. AA locks do not mean a confirmed kill. I had the pleasure of watching several well skilled pilots evade locked missiles with chafe/drastic maneuvers/afterburner combinations. Afterburners are now being saved and used for evade purposes rather than hurry to the target devices. Several times they evaded them without chafes. Does it always work, no, but it does work. Pilots have already been making adjustments to their flying skills to account for the balancing done to the AA and it seems to balance out pretty well to me.
    3. AA placements have now become more affective tools for keeping those pesky aircrafts at bay. It is not fool proof. I was still surprised and taken out several times from well crafted angle attacks and front gunning before I could achieve a solid lock.
    4. Aircraft’s armor still protects them a significant amount. I had single missiles hit on both planes and choppers that failed to destroy the aircraft. But it does get their attention and they do “bug” out fast.
    5. The AT rocket is now a much more effective weapon for detouring choppers. One hit is enough to have the pilot think twice about sticking around. Those that do must relay on their front gunner to find you and take you out fast before you can reload.
So, is this patch the end to air domination? No, but it does significantly even the air and ground to a more level field. IMHO this patch is a perfect balance between the two “factions”. After my experience I’m letting the “The AA changes are the end of Air” hype die with the rest of the myths. The ground now has the ability to give as well as it has received.

did you play IRON GATOR OR GHOST TOWN ??

On Iron gator is was hard to get on ship, now the essex can hit both choppers without any problems when they lift 2 feet from spawn place, meaning mec can't reach the ship .

GHOST town, there are 4 AA sites on that map, 3 of them can hit choppers on there spawn point , and to make it complete there are 2 extra movable AA vehicles on the map

    talk about balance

Funny you should mention the Iron Gator, I played 2 rounds as the US and got fairly well attacked, we lost 1 of the 2 rounds. The Boat can hit the heli's well but the MEC APC can keep the AA gun down the whole round easily, conversly the US can no longer rape the MEC spawn, i'd say the map is MORE balanced if anything.

Something needs to be done about armor.

        Which they never ever change.

Yeah, choppers on ghost town are completely pointless now, also with the improved snipers, the m95s are shooting at cockpits...

I just played on a pcked 64 ghost town, NO ONE used the choppers...

          the patch is pathetic

Iron Gator is now a challenge to get on the carrier! Challenges are fun, especially while playing online shooters. The carrier was way too easy to board before patch v1.2.

I just played my first rounds since I installed the patch. I played air defense on iron gator and within 5 minutes I had 21 kills with the AA missiles. Of course the Navy Seals won by a lot the 2 rounds I was playing. It was impossible for the MEC choppers to get to the carrier. At one point I killed 5 people at once that were in the transport chopper. In general I like flying choppers a lot, but I think lot of pilots including myself will be switching to something else with this patch, maybe sniper.

i welcome these changes with open arms. no more shall plane and heli whores rack up forty kills in a single round with no deaths.

to those of you b!tching about no longer being able to play heli, just look at it this way: the heli is a hit and run vehicle. before the patch it was hit and hit and hit and hit and hit (i could go on for hours).... just use the terrain to your advantage- you cant be locked on to through thick trees or a building.

"The AA missiles are significantly better in tracking and taking down aircrafts with little or no incidental team damage from wayward missiles."

You've got to be kidding. In one game I had my missiles veer off into a rediculous turn which had my missiles screaming towards a teammate that was not only off screen, but above, and almost straight left of me. That happened at least 3 times. It would be understandable if perhaps friendlies were in the same general direction as I was firing, but this was rediculous. Lucky for me 2/3 times it decided to go after a full, injured friendly attack chopper. 4 teamkills without even trying, hooray!

It is a double edged sword though. I've shot four missiles and 1-2 of them decided to go after an enemy chopper that I didn't even know existed.

Oh yes, and anyone else notice the fun little double helix dance two missiles will do at the nose of an enemy plane right before it gets blown up?
