  • 1.2 patch and you

According to the interview on this site, 1.2 should release either tommorrow, or very soon. Also apparently some server providers are sending emails saying they have access to patch servers on the 14th... suppossedly, I'm not claiming it will. But, last patch I saw way too many people complaining about how they patched and then had to reinstall for a competitive match the same day. Also, people werent able to compare the patches very well because they couldnt go between them easily without reinstalling. Now, for all you nubs who don't know how to do this, this is how you dont go ****ing yourselves over A-if the patch sucks, or B-if you want to do a detailed comparison:

Copy your whole EA Games directory to your desktop. (You now have two bf2 games on your pc. One within C:/ProgramFiles/EaGames, and one on your desktop)

Patch the Bf2 within your Program Files (not the one on your desktop)

Now you can launch 1.2 from an executable that runs from within C:/program files/eagames/bf2, and a seperate executable that runs from within the desktop/eagames/bf2. Now you can run either 1.12 bf2, or 1.2 bf2. When the patch is made official delete the folder on your desktop. Voila easy as pie.

That does not work simply because different patches may have different ways of handling your CD-Key in Windows Registry.

this does work "simply" because we had to do this iwhen we had the alpha 1.2 patch and were testing it. all we had to do we copy the dir in and out to switch versions

That was true with 1.02 -> 1.03 because they added encryption. I doubt they are going to make any more changes like that. This method would work for 1.00+1.01+1.02 or 1.03+1.12+probably 1.2. You could also make a backup of the old registry setting so you could restore that if needed.
