I run a GF6800 GT 256 mb card and I have spent the last week or so experimenting with different drivers. The reason for this is I usually install the latest drivers when they come out on the guru3d site. I normally avoid the Nvidia official releases and tend to use the optimised modified drivers instead.

Recently I have been having a lot of different troubles with the latest drivers - anything after 82.xx (lock ups,BSOD,lagging, corrupt textures, screen freezing) hence my experiment. The latest WHQL drivers are 83.40 and I found that the latest modified 83.60 drivers just wouldn't run BF2.
Any way I have found that by far the best are the 81.98 drivers (I believe someone posted on here about them a couple of days ago). Although they were released on 21st Dec 05 (which is quite old in driver terms) they specifically address issues in BF2 and I found them to be the smoothest, most stable with the highest frame rates(although the graphics didnt look quite as good as the newer drivers - seems to be a question of performance over quality).
By the way I run all settings on high except lighting which I have set to low and a screen res of 1024x768 @ 60 Hz.

Hope this helps
