    Oddly Deadly Air to Air!?

    Hey guys,

Well I'm a pilot with ~ 70 hours of flight time, and as any pilot knows, in general the air to air missles are a joke. A good way to spot a new pilot is if he's locking onto you constantly...

But lately, a few times, I've had something very odd happen. Three times, with three seperate people in another plane, I was flying a plane, and they would lock onto me, and maybe 1/2 sec later the missles would all hit me, and I'd be dead.

I get back into the plane, up there again, they lock onto me, and for the life of me, I can't manage to dodge the missles. Pretty much whenever they lock onto you, I'm dead. I even had co pilot agree (su-30) that it was very odd that the missles were so good.

So I tell the enemy pilots they are amazing. :) They all respond, "Lol! I never fly"

Sure enough I check their stats, and all three had less than 500 kills in the plane.

Anyone else experience this? It's very odd, almost like somethings the Air to air bugs, and is 100% deadly..

Did they have a co-pilot? Usually if the lock, and hit come within that little time, you got shot with the CO-pilot's guided missiles. I've seen it done, and it's not that hard if the pilot in frotn stays still enough for 3 seconds.

Question is were you in a turn, or flying somewhat straight because you didn't know he's behind you? How close was he behind you?

I've experienced the same thing, but I can do it to them too, so I don't see what's so bad about it.

pretty sure it was a stray missile as they have a very short lock time.

That is a very old and easy trick.
Just switch to the ground radar and chase your enemy. He will not have the lock warning. when you think you can hit him switch to the air-to-air missles and hit instantly. it will kill in less than a second and the enemy will not have a chance to respond. However, this will not be easy against experienced pilots because a good one will keep watching his back even if there is no lock warning.

Well given how you were in a bomber, and attempting evasive manuevers it depends on how you tried to dodge. Did you go for an inversion with burners? Or to the side? Additionally, if the enemy pilot hit his breaks while turning and then hitting afterburners, his missile is going to turn with your jet and will more likely hit. Otherwise, another possibility is that the enemy pilots were "LPBs" low ping #@$@#$ and therefore you heard the lock and tone after he fired. Making you, well, likely half dead before you could respond.

I mean this as a joke but...

It warms my heart when a pilot complains about "dying too quickly" and that "it happened several times in a row". Considering the way some pilots have relegated the game from "capturing flags" to "running from air power" I don't think it's such a bad thing that once in a great while you get killed without warning. It's kind of like a Billionaire sitting in a multi-million dollar home, sipping $1,000 brandy, and having a fleet of $100,000 cars complain about paying too much income tax.

Take it as a joke; that's how I meant it...

well, I found the friendly missile is the HARDEST to dodge
For enemy's They have to have a 3 second of seeking before a firm lock
                which is:
beep beep beep beep beep beep BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!

But for friendly's, it won't lock on you actually, but when the missiles miss the target, it will seek another one, which will give only 1 second of FIRM beeep warning noise:
                BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! And HIT!
                The next thing:
Depends if I have any substained damages...
                if yes.....BOOM...
If no : Mahoro: Cease Fire! Cease Fire now!!

I did play in one server before, it was modded and ranked, the admin improved heatseeking power by 300%, and pretty much whoever launch the missile first, wins. (flare doesn;t work anymore, missile can hit from any angle)

in reality, it takes considerable skill to evade missiles.

A little advice from one pilot to another:

When you're pursuing an enemy jet, follow with your bomb HUD. Once you're almost against your enemy's tail, raise your crosshair above them (this is all assuming that they're flying in a pretty straight line). Switch to your missile HUD and immediately start firing even before you get missile lock. Out of three missiles, you should get 2 good hits, which will make finishing them off with your cannon very easy. If they had already taken damage, those 2 missile hits will down them.

Note: this also works when your enemy is turning or looping. Aim your crosshair above them and you should still hit them even in the curves. :)

He was probably so far up your ass that he was just getting lock as he fired the missiles on you. If you put your jet just over his and your nose right above his tail, you can fire them off and they will hit you without a lock. You can do the same thing in a turn if you time it just right.

This was on a ranked server with no mods.

This wasn't friendly fire (although, yes those missles are a pain)

The guy didn't lock onto me and fire his missles instantly. All of the guys were not regular pilots, and NEW. You guys are assuming these pilots were good. They were NOT. They were firing the missles from long range.

Whenever they would lock onto me, I would automatically switch to front view (looking back), which is usually how I fly to lose the pilot. They would eventually get a lock from long range, I'd evade like normal, but couldn't lose the missles. That or either it would lock onto to me, and 1/2 sec later I'd be dead.

I'm not new, I can usually go 40-0 a round on the plane, dodge anti-air like it's a joke. However, when I encounter this "bug" there is no way to lose the missles.

Friendly fire is the worst, you get hit by your own team then an enemy missile hits when your half health.

Were you up high in altitude? If you were, that is alot of your problem right there.

I'll try to explain this simply, if you don't know already.

Exclude the afterburner for a minute here on this paragraph. The higher you go, the faster you go, the faster you go, the worse you turn. The lower you go, the slower you go, the slower you go, the better you turn.

Now, for the afterburner part. The afterburner will make you turn tighter at any given altitude than you would without it at full throttle.

For some reason, the missiles don't have this problem and I can typically tag alot more kills with the missiles at a higher altitude than I can at a lower altitude because of that. So if you were up high, that is why you were getting tagged by missiles.

I'm not going to bother going into an explanation about why the afterburner works the way it does, because it is something I have explained on this board already. I have a good idea why the missiles work the way they do at higher altitudes, I just haven't gotten around to testing it with a friend because I don't really feel like making a minimod just to test a theory of mine. And because it is a theory, I am not going to bother stating it until I actually test it.

If you knew all this already, just ignore what I said.
