Best of the best would be the X-fi fatality, but it's outragiously expensive. I reccomend the X-fi Xtreme music.

sb audigy 2 zs is a great card for the money, but the x-fi cards are better. They are also a lot more expensive!

Not to push you away from the XFI series, but you might want to take a look at a thread I hijacked a while back that documents my own troubles. Currently things seem a-okay but it did require me getting a new videocard and mobo:

Wifi? You mean X-fi? No it doesn't use the same chip.

Actually the best of the best IS THE X-Fi Elite Pro. ~$400 (US)

Depends on your definition of the "best of the best". When it comes to my computer, I really don't buy based on price. So, while I have the Xtreme Music right now, I used to have the XFI Platinum, and I'd get the Fatal1ty if I thought it was worthwhile. But as far as I know only one game uses the xram, the Xtreme music DOES have some xram, just not very much at all. You really don't need it though. The only thing that any card above the Xtreme Music has are options for higher end sound work. That means plugging your keyboard into your computer, running optical lines in and out, etc. If all you do is listen to music and play games, then the Xtreme Music is great. If you do professional sound work, like make music etc, then the upper cards are worth looking at.

Just because it's more expensive and has more things doesn't make it better. You can throw spinners on a Yugo but it still won't make it go faster =P
                  -----------
Edit: Plus you have draw the line at a certain point. For argument's sake, let's say that the Fatal1ty's 64mb of xram actually gave you an FPS boost. But it was only by an average of 5fps. Now let's say that you're current fps is above 50, and the Fatal1ty (not in real life, just for this discussion) cost $400 and that's all it did extra, was give you the 5fps. Would you be willing to spend $270 for 5fps? Cause the Xtreme Music costs about $135. Great value and great sound. Sounds no differnt than any of it's parent cards. And if you ARE willing to spend that for 5fps, what would your limit be? Because I'll get you those fps for whatever price you're willing to pay =P

My understanding is that headphones are still only as good as what they're plugged into =P
