New system to play BF2 on !!

Ok I decided to upgrade my PC, my old specs below weren't cutting play bf2

Sempron 2300+
1 gig of kingston 3200
Sapphire X800 Pro 256mb

To

Athlon 64 (Venice) 3200+
512mb of kingston 3200 (giving me 1.5 gig)
Gigabyte 7800GT 256mb

I'm hoping I can up my settings a bit, To have a decent frame rate on my 19" LCD I have everything off turned off except terrain & textures at medium, running at 1280x1024.

You guys/gals reckon i'll be able to have a few settings at high or all on medium at 1280x1024?

I reccommend going up to 2GB, you will notice a difference.

Thanks I'll probably invest in another 1 gig of ram in the next week - hopefully that'll set me up for a year or so.

As wellas running bf2 I hope it runs my everquest 2 smoother & the next game on my too buy list, elder scroll Oblivion L:-)

I'd say up your processor a little. Get one which will maximise the utilisation of your graphics card.

I've been told paring the 6800gfx with 3500+ and the 6600gfx with 3200+ is the optimum set in terms of cost/ performance. So if your getting the 7800 then maybe a 3800+ maybe called for??

I would stay with the X800 for now, and wait to get the 7800.

You might squeek buy with that RAM but I've seen lot's of MB's have trouble when you try to run 6 ranks (3 sticks of 512MB). The memory controller on that CPU only supports up to 6 ranks at PC3200 with a 1T command rate but most BIOS's are hosed when it comes to actually doing it.

I second the motion to just buy 2GB (2 1GB modules) and get it over with. I suspect you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

BTW, I work for a competing memory company and am speaking from experience.

Unfortunately i'm not minted, these parts are incoming probably here on mondays so i'm stuck with them - I could possibly overclock the 3200 a little but thats about it.

As for keeping the x800 pro, thats an AGP card & new motherboard is PCI-E so thats a no go.

I do not have 3 512mb sticks, I have a single 1 gig stick & a 512mb stick.

Also i'm not a hardcore PC nut, nor do I wish FPS up in the 80's - steady 40's would be ideal :-)

P.S if some can move this to support part of forum i'd much appreciate it.
