WTF is going on here? I may have to give up on BFII if I can't resalve this and that is going to suck! any IT experts out there?

Re: What causes high ping rates?
Do you shutdown anything that connects to the internet while playing? (For example I close Steam, Getright and my Antivirus while I play)
Also, is it a shared connection? -

Re: What causes high ping rates?
Are you on a Network that is sharing the internet and resources with other computers? If so, check and see if people are downloading.
Also try not to play on German Servers if you live in the US.... I played on a German Server once and I had a ping of 500+Comment

Re: What causes high ping rates?
There is a few lag problems on every server, due to the upcoming patch.
I was on my server last night, where I usually get a ping around 24, and I had one of 496?!?
It's a shared connection but no-one was on the other PCs, even if they were, I'd just close the internet port to that bandwidth eating PC

Re: What causes high ping rates?
ping is about 90% related to distance to serverOriginally posted by D_LustedThere is a few lag problems on every server, due to the upcoming patch.

sometimes it the Internet's fault
and you are getting rerouted
our clan boss gets 15 ping every day
and for 2 days had ping over 200
(local comcast was having a rebuild)
of course, there may be other issuses
like your own system overload - but that should be kept clean

Re: What causes high ping rates?
Your ping is a measure of the time it takes for your computer to talk to the server and get a response, somewhat like a sonar ping a submarine would use. There are several factors that can slow this down:
-distance to the server (the further the distance, the slower/higher the ping)
-speed of the connection (if there are downloads running, the ping will have less bandwidth to use and therefore will be slower. Also, if you are on Dial-up, your ping will be slower than someone on a T3)
-computer processing (if your computer is slow or doing something else, such as running other programs, it will slow down gameplay)
If anything is messing with any of these factors, your ping will consequently be slower. I'm not an IT guy, so someone with more experience in this area feel free to correct me.Comment

Re: What causes high ping rates?
Except that, for the most part, stuff on your HDD and it's fragmentation level have little or nothing to do with ping. More than likely, your ISP was having a hiccup and causing your bad pings. If you normally get great pings and all the sudden are getting crappy ones, your first assumption should be that your ISP is crapping out. Do a traceroute to the IP of the server you are trying to play on and see where the high pings start.Originally posted by XM DUDEI took of a programm off my hard drive and ran defrag and that seemed to help.Comment

Doubtful. I've seen pings as low as 5 though. But I know for a fact that the player was about 5 minutes away from where the server was located.Comment
