low fps with a nice system

I just formatted my harddrives and installed Windows (this time w/o RAID) last night, in hopes of fixing my lame BF2 fps. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to do anything.
My fps can drop to the low 20s, sometimes even 18. Usually in a nice firefight on Karkand it rarely goes above 30. When I'm just running around in a 64 player server, away from the players, the fps still stays at around 50 or lower. My setup is listed in my sig and I'm trying to play it on all high @ 1280x1024 and 2x AA.
To get a better idea of the fps I get and to compare it to what you guys get, I've made a nice little timedemo, which I use Battlelauncher to run. According to FRAPS, my average fps was 33.313 with a max of 71 and a min of 19. It would be awesome if some of you guys with a 7800gt could try it out... maybe I'm just expecting too much.

Edit: forgot to mention I'm using 81.98 drivers

yep. I tried both the one's on the CD and the newest from intel.com. I'm using the most current BIOS too

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but.... It might be your Intel chip. I challenge anyone out there with an Intel chip in a similarly equiped machine to pull benchmarks better than AMD chips. It is no longer just a rumor or wives tale, AMD 64's just plain kick a mudhole through the Intel chip. Just look at the 3dmark threads, AMD's continue to smoke Intel. Just my 2 cents.

Um... are my 3dMark scores really that bad?
They may be 200 points less than the people with amd, but I certaintly don't think 200 points less in 3DMark05 translates to half the average frame rate in BF2

Guys you keep pointing to new hardware, Intel vs AMD etc.
The problem is PB.
Go onto a Punkbuster enabled server and you'll have the problem.
Then visit a server with PB off and see how your fps is skyhigh again...

What does it matter if AMD benches better than Intel? What does this have to do with his FPS problems? His 3DMark scores seem about right. I have a rig half as good as the thread starter's, and fps are at 80-110 constant during gameplay without PB.

Run some memory benchmarks...I don't know much about Pentiums, but maybe if it's in single channel, putting into dual might help.

If it is in dual already, can't help.

Memory is fine (tested with Memtest).

I bet many other people are having the same frame drops as me but do not notice that much due to high-end hardware. Have a look at your ingame fps (renderer.drawfps 1) and then tell me that your fps are still the same as 2-3 weeks ago.

I opened a support ticket at Evenbalance. See if they know something. It HAS to have something to do with PB. It does NOT happen on servers WITHOUT PB enabled.

I love how fast you are to jump on a P4. Even though chips from P4 are no longer being made, it was simply at the end of the architechture life cycle. Do you remember when AMD was crap when the P4's first came out? It was because AMD was perfecting the Athlon 64. ALL of the newer Intel chips are going to have some technology from the mobile chips. Why? Because the mobile chips are cool and get excellent clocks. Even the new Turion from AMD can't compete with the older mobile chips. The Intel Dual core chips have a tough time with the Athlon 64x2 because they are still based on the prescott heater's. Even if the AMD chips are getting better clocks and performance than the Intel P4's, it is not going to cause what the poster is having issues with. I have a 2.6ht northwood that get's 60+ fps on an 850 pro, a 3.2ht northwood that get's 80+ on an 850xt pe, and a 3.2ht prescott (@3.6) that get's 90+ on an 850xt pe. So again, it's not the chip. It is a system issue, or something weird w/ his 7800.

Regardless of the Intel lovers out there, the idea of Intel retaking the gaming market is silly. AMD has already established a firm foothold in the PC Gamer market. It makes me laugh when I hear about a gamer with a "rad" new intel-based system, with DDR2 ("it is soo much faster than DDR400", really, until you look at CAS Latencies like 3.0 and realize that this is just another failed technology from Intel.) Why waste your $$?

This is not a thread debating Intel vs AMD.
Fact is that BF2 ran fine on Intel CPU's (provided they are of newer generation)
Do you believe that the original thread poster's rig isn't sufficient to run BF2 at decent framerates, even though it's equipped with an Intel 4 Processor? Should he buy a new mainboard, and a new AMD cpu to play BF2? Come on...

I agree with you that AMD have better gaming performance in most cases, and the newest generation FX-64 processors beat the P4EE performance-wise. My next rig will probably be built around AMD technology. But this has nothing to do with the initial problem we are discussing here in this thread.

I have a feeling that things are gonna start to change over the next few years. As soon as intel can get over using the FSB to access the ram things will improve. Being that AMD has an on die memory controller thus having a much faster access to the ram will improve performance considerably. (BF2 loves this)
