Need help with low FPS/Lag

Now my computer stats are:
p4 3.0 ghz - 800FSB - 1mb cache
2gb pc 3200 DDR - dual channel
eVGA 6800GT 256mb


Now, i dont have a sound card..i use the onboard mother board sound.

This game STILL LAGS!!! I have defragged, changed the bf2.exe to bf21.exe, uninstalled and reinstalled, deleted all the files in the mods folder, closed processes running other than essential and i still lag when ever there are more than 2 guys on the screen..even on all LOW SETTINGS...

This computer should be running the game on all MED/HIGH settings, but i cant even get smooth gameply on the losest damn settings..

This question may seem a bit odd, but is it possible that I need to play the game on teh same resolution that my Monitor is on for the desk top? My desktop is usually at 1280x1024 but i try to play on 1024 or 800x600 (get worst lag here, with all settings on low!!!) Ill take it one step further..Is it possibel I need to crank my settings high to make it run better?...im so totally f'ing lost!

well make sure that if you are running an AGP card that the bios is set to 8x AGP and not 4x

Also if your ram is cheapo ram or was damaged due to ESD and poor handling it will cause graphical lag.

Make sure that your CPU isnt overclocked or underclocked. Check and make sure that its running at the Speed its made for. Goto RUN type DXDIAG then on the pain page it will tell u the speed its running at.

Also if you have a older hard drive like mine (4MB cache) (40GB) then your page swapping might be going crazy and graphical settings wouldnt matter then.


Also, right click on desktop, goto the settings tab, click advanced and then click the troubleshooting tab.....make sure "Enable write combing" is disabled. (unchecked).

And if the bios as AGP fast write enabled turn it off.

spyware scan? virus scan?. and make sure u disable virus protection when u play... do you get a good ping tough? maybe connection probs.....

i have spyware and norton running when i play......that isnt really a big problem unless its scanning

Cheapo ram is relative...bought Patriot Memory signature series..got solid reviews on NewEgg...no virus's or spyware..I have scanned...could be an HD problem..how can i check the cache of my HD..I do seem to remember that it was 60GB, 7200rpm with 8mb cache...I will say that when i first installed the game, it ran fine..then all of a sudden (maybe 3 weeks ago) I started to get seraious drop in FPS...oh yeah, i also have NOTHING running in the background...

For the AGP card, i have it set to Auto in BIOS..but AGP Arpature is set to 64mb..there is a 128 option and 256 option..i did have it on 256, but it didnt help any performance

Could it be punkbuster? Should I install that update??

try the update but it could be you page swapping on the Hard drive.....and this is more true if your Hard drive is more than 30% full

Ok, try deleting your cache by doing the following:

-browse to this directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\My Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache
-delete everything you see there
-load up BF2
-load up a single player map to optimize shaders
-once the map is loaded, quit BF2
-defrag your HD
-reboot
-play BF2

As far as your pagefile goes, you may want to try setting your pagefile to 'ZERO', reboot your machine, defrag, and then reset your pagefile.

Right-click 'My Computer' and select 'Properties' (or Windows Key + Pause/Break)
Click on the 'Advanced' tab
Click on the 'Settings' button under 'Performance'
Click on the 'Advanced' tab
Hit the 'Change' button

I am getting the same frame slowdown as the thread poster. I have a similar machine setup, and it just happened recently. It only happens on PB enabled servers.
In SP, and local play I get an avg. of 80-110 fps most settings high, some med.
I have Corsair XMS DDR400 (also tested with memtest) and everything is absolutely fine with my PC. It is not getting too hot either (watercooling).
All pb_sleep 500, clear cache, defrag, etc. has not helped either.
It's really getting annoying because playing the game is not very enjoyable anymore with such low fps.

My PC is optimized for games, has nothing unnessecary running in the background, and all other games run absolutely fine. BF2 was too, until just a few days ago...:cry:

I have a similar system 2.4GHZ P4 768MEGS OF DDR333 PNY6800GT and i am super sluggish even on lowest settings possible now mind you i can play cs source at 80 fps and now i cant play bf2? how can i fix this bs problem, i swear nvidia blows balls there always some damn driver problem.

there has been a serious propblem with MAJOR lag everywhere
before you get too worried
play in multiple servers and see if it is everywhere
we caught EA/PB monitoring our games
and it really screwed up the updates for EVERYONE in our games
also - we tried using the BFrecorder
and that made it AWFUL as well
or the Internet in the area of your server may be trashed for a while
(yes - we had all the above over the past month)

now - if you get it everywhere
then - hmmm - sorry - too many possibilites
I suspect:
HD too full
HD needs deferag
your router may be failing
your Pwr supply may be failing
your net provider (eg cable too crowded)
back gound apps (you might not even know they are running - make sure you check for hidden HD writes and CPU utilization)

HD too full: ca. 25GB free on each partition AT LEAST
defrag: I use O&O defrag regularely on my machine
router: It's my job to set up routers, and configure networks. I am sure that this is not the problem.
Pwr supply: 550 Watt Antec + UPS from APC
ISP: 2Mbit ADSL(+FP)
Backround apps, Deamons, processes: None, only the minimum required to run the box. It really is a gaming rig. Although not newest technology.
HD access, CPU utilization is at normal usage.

I can assure you that NONE of the things you mentioned apply to my situation. Most my friends have the exact same problem since about one week now on similar rigs.
I have been working as a System Administrator for several years now, and in the IT business for over 10 years overall. My experience in the IT field go all the way back to the C64. I know it is not my system and this is why I will not touch do any changes. Last thing I did was install BF2 on a different drive and partition. Did not resolve anything.
Also, what most of you people seem to ignore is the fact that it only happens on Punkbuster enabled servers.
Your advise is appreciated, but not really helpful.
