Some advice on flag capturing

Although many of us have played BF2 for many hours now, I have one or two bits of advice for both squads and lone wolves. Since I started playing this game there has been one aspect of other people’s play that irks the heck out of me. It has to do with flag captures. My advice is:

When you are attempting to capture a flag either in a squad or as a lone wolf with a bunch of other teammates who happen to be in the area….GET ON THE FLAG.

Some flags take a while to capture and you are just giving the enemy time to respawn by not getting the flag quickly. And remember when they respawn…THEY KNOW WHERE YOU ARE BECAUSE YOU JUST KILLED THEM 15 SECONDS AGO.

Too often I see players who are dancing around the periphery of the flag radius doing I don’t know what. Think…if you get the flag to neutral you no longer have to worry about respawning enemies.

Yes, but it is important, sometimes, to have one medic on the outside of the blast radius just in case some psycho spec ops guy C4ed the flag.

I think it's good to have people watching the perimeter. One grenade could take out 6 people huddled around a flag. It sucks to be the guy outside watching, b/c you don't get capture points, but sometimes it has to be done. But I agree, 2+ is better than one guy capping

The point is: never try to capture a flag alone if you killed an enemy near this flag... More often than not he will respawn in time to get you. Unless you are trying to sneak behind enemy lines and capture a flag left undefended, capturing a defended flag alone is risky. At least, try to do it with a fellow on your side. The two of you should be able to bring it to neutral in time to prevent a respawn. But then but bug out fast for as soon as the enemy commander sees a flag going neutral you can expect an artillery strike within 15 seconds. Or if he spotted you while you went to capture the flag, he put the artillery strike on your heads as soon as you tried to lower the flag or even before. That's why when I neutralize a flag with my squad, we move 50 meters away, hide & wait some seconds. Either artillery falls or enemy troops come to take the flag back. If none of this occurs we then seize the flag. Now if you are a complete squad of 5 or 6 person, you can expect to neutralize & capture the flag all withing 15 seconds, the minimum time for a respawn / artillery strike. Then get the hell out of Dodge City !!!!! ;-)

Two guys in the flag radius makes the flag cature process faster than one lone soldier.
My best advice is to have two soldiers in the radius and a squad leader or medic outside the radius, because many times artillary has hit when I have attempted to capture a flag or bombs from above

YOu can also ask for UAV support or talk to the commander by VOIP and have him scan the map.

What you guys said makes a lot of sense. Actually, in my clan I play squad leader almost exclusively and our MO is for everyone to get on the flag while I stay outside. While doing this I either stay hidden so they can respawn on me or spot enemies coming in while I'm at a safe distance.

Of course since we typically have only 3-4 people in the squad (including me) my advice of "everyone on the flag except me" makes sense. In a larger sqaud I can understand why you might have one or two guys on the periphery of the flag/control point. But I also think you need to make it clear who will be doing what BEFORE you get to a flag so there is no confusion once you get there.

Defining roles in a sqaud is one of the first steps in being a high-performing squad in my opinion that goes far beyond kit selection. That's why I hate "pick-up" squads (being a squad leader with squad members I don't know).

What i like to do in game is get a flag from a different position so if someone does spawn and lobs a nade taking everyone out there's still someone just around the corner still capping the flag and the guys just killed can respawn and back me up.

I'll just kill the last guy by the flag and in my head, starting counting down until the guy respawns. At about '5' I'll run and take cover somwhere, hoping to kill that last guy who is sure to respawn again and then finish off capping the flag.

I have a couple hints for capturing flags, and the maps with bombers comes to mind:

If you are capturing as USMC and you know the bomber is waiting for a bombing run, get out of your vehicle. IF you have enemies around, try and take them out, but I recommend to NEVER capture a flag unless someone is there helping you. There are so many strategies that I can think of, and some are my own, but essentially, by getting out of your vehicle, you don't show up on anyone's "lock". If you're more than 1 person, you might be in luck and capture quickly enough to run away from the bomb run 3 secs later. :)

One other thing to remember when playing against a smart commander, and I see this 90% of the time. I'm not sure how it works when your audio is set to low or medium, but if I'm capturing a flag by myself, and I hear that art. shooting, you can be damn sure I'm running the hell away from my position, because there is a great chance that the barrage is meant for you. I normally scream "go go go" and I'm normally right. :) I learned that lesson from the very beginning!! hehe

I wish all people played intelligently, but then again, it would make it that much harder for me to win if that was the case. I welcome new-comers and stupid players anytime, it makes my job much easier.

agreed, learn the radius, plenty of places to hide a few guys safely, so when that stray grenade comes in you don't all die.

Example: Sharqi Peninsual, Construction Site. There are 2 things to deal with when capping this flag. #1. Exploding barrels, shoot them before you go to cap, I've killed many a guy by blasting barrels at flags. #2. Cap Radius - there is a partial wall facing towards the North (alleyway), you can get behind this wall and still cap. :)

Machstem and the thread starter have good points that i also try to live by so read them everyone pls.

I'd like to add my hints here also.

When you have just captured a flag, get away from it.. at least out of the cap-radius. Theres no point stying under the flag cos thats the place the enemy will clear out first. And also.. if u want points u should letthe enemy inside flag radius and collect thedefence bonuses :)


Listen carefully to know if arty is coming and if u think the enemy is coming to recapture the flag, prepare for it (plant c4 into bottlenecks near the flag or sthing).

If you're alone it's no shame to stay in hiding and let the enemy capture the flag back.. just hide until they leave and take it back.
