    User Friendly servers?

I guess that subject heading is a little ambiguous. I'm not talking about servers that are easy to log onto.

I have played BF1942, Desert Combat and DCX to death. I absolutely loved flying choppers in DC and DCX even though it took months to master it. I'm a little sad that the choppers in BF2 are so much easier to pilot. Anyway, I never played online, just LAN Co-op games with friends. We played a lot though and eventually knew all the little secrets and tricks, though I'm sure we developed our own style of play which influenced how we reacted in any given situation.

Now that I'm playing online with BF2, I find that I'm lost half the time (not literally, though that does happen). I don't get orders from my squad leaders or commanders nearly as often as I thought I would. I feel like I'm running around with no idea what is really going on and when I do find another person, I get killed almost instantly. Obviously there is a big difference between online play and LAN play with friends.

That being said, are there any ranked servers out there that are "new-guy" (note, I did not say newbie) friendly? Servers with good squad leaders and opponents who aren't easily frustrated or p***ed off? It would be nice to find a place to play where people are just as eager to help teach as they are to lead a good squad and command a good game. Are there any places like this?

I have found the best way to learn is to have someone to show you the ropes. Anyone out there know where a quick-study like me can get in on the action without feeling left behind?

Thanks for any advice and tips. Happy hunting.

There are two of us. Let's form a clan.

It can be the Clan Canned.

Luckily there are sites like this that help "show the way".

no, all servers sadly are much the same (unless they are exclusive clan servers or have REALLY good admins). read "help me" threads on this forum and you can learn a lot.

I see. That's what I was afraid of. It's good to know I'm not the only one though, at least. Thanks for the moral support, if anything.

I guess I'll just keep plugging away. If anyone sees Dunder Chief online be kind. I know how to play the game and I'm a good FPS player. I just need some help with the mechanics of squad based play in BF2.

Or I can just form the Bullseye Clan. As in "we're the clan with bullseyes painted on our backs".

Try out our server, Boojie plays on there from time to time. I'm sure we would help you guys out. We have everyone from the new guys to the pro's play, I'm sure you can find a good squad and start to learn the way to play online quickly. Don't be suprised if you get your ass handed to you though, most people are pretty friendly and willing to help out.

The only thing we ask from the new guys is if you can't fly, then please don't! There is nothing more frustrating then a new guy hops in a heli, you hop in to co-pilot, you fly 20ft and then crash. Please learn to fly offline or on other servers. Other than that all are welcome.

We also have working battle recorder so you can download your games later and check out where you went wrong or check out where the experienced guys go right!

I don't mind (??) getting my ass handed to me, I'm learning. But when I go to server and get killed within 3 secs of spawning, I get ****ed. I think my biggest problem is the overall speed of the game. I pick up enemies just a tick slower than the experienced players and I die as a result.

I'll check out that server, thanks for the reply.

                    Sign me up, Dunder Chief.

I have a background just like yours. Loved DCX online or in a LAN with a bunch of pals. Great game, fun times, so many laughs.

But, in the past 150 or so hours I've spent with BF2, I have learned to hate BF2 public servers, each one of which has its own obscure set of unique rules, and seems to be admined and populated exclusively by 15 year old crack addicts who can't spell, can't think, can't help others, and certainly won't ever cooperate with anyone who's not a part of their ~pWnZrA$$h()L3s~ clan.

I think that the stats, badges, ranks, and unlocks have a lot to do with fostering a style of game play that's extremely self-centered, cut-throat, bullying, and pi$$es people off. Not to mention, it creates an evironment where the concern isn't fun, but instead it's all about seeking some advantage, and too many are pursuing that advantage through outright cheats, or simple things, like tuning their systems to maximum FPS, playing only on the lowest-ping-to-them servers, playing only one or two maps for hundreds of rounds, (like CS with Dust), or even by seeking out exploits, padding their stats with friends or clan members, and always seeking out some other clever trick that makes the game or the scoring system work a little more to their advantage. It's all so that they then have bragging rights based on their stats pages, whether they're bragging to someone halfway around the world, or sitting next to them in Algebra 1.

In other words, the culture of the game is becoming exactly like CS, especially in this sense: it's turned into a giant, 24x7, global, anger-generating machine in which teenagers are encouraged to be ruthlessly self-centered braggarts, while those of us who are adults eventually drift away, shaking our heads, saying "what ever happened to sportsmanship, teamwork, and fun?" Oh, that's not leet enough. What's that lame-a$$ed teamwork sh^t going to do for my K/D ratio? How is sportsmanship going to help me get that golden explosives badge? "This is about war", they say "no rules in war". No, it's not. It's a game. And even war has rules.

So yeah, it's becoming CS with shiny badges, invincible aircraft, and random artillery strikes to break up the really good firefights. At least the chopper/plane whoring is coming to an end in the next big patch, but the rest will never change.

I totally agree with HKS on that, and it's one of the best bits of advice for any new player.

We have admins normally practicing on our server in the early evening before the server gets busy, and any new players are welcome to drop by and join them, they will usually answer questions too! IP is down there in my sig.

                        Re: User Friendly servers?

I never understood the whole "l77thaxor" (whatever) mentality. I'm old enough now that I remember playing 'Adventure', the first true computer game (text only). I've been playing computer games ever since and things sure have changed since the inception of online FPS games. The overall perception is that it's all about image and "coolness" as opposed to having a good gaming experience. I was able to get that experience with my friends in LAN Co-Op games but I guess the guys making the decisions over at EA are only concerned with online gamers, thus they removed Co-Op play from the game altogether. (shaking my head).

I'm still not decided if I'm going to stick with this game or not. The online experience is just so touch-and-go. It's possible I may find a server with great guys who are helpful and are more interested in the fun of the game than in showing off and heaping insults on less experienced players. More than likely, however, I'll end up on servers where I get killed every 4 seconds and then have some prepubescant kid tell me I'm a *** because I die so often.

It's pretty obvious that sportsmanship and respect died with the latest generation of gamers.

                        Sigh.

                            Re: User Friendly servers?

It's been said ad nauseum in other threads of this nature, but I suppose there continues to be a large player base un-aware's of the community that is www.tacticalgamer.com.

the TG server is unranked for many of the reasons that BlueBunny pointed out, but also because teamwork is stressed, not personal point gain. There are several scripts that run to enforce this, including forcing all players to join a squad within 60 seconds of joining the server or be auto-kicked. We also have a script that will remove players for supporting members if the server is full. These scripts are against EA's ranked server policy, which is another reason TG is unranked. Players with similar issues to the ones stated with the BF2 community at large, would be well advised to check out TG.

You'll find friendly players that will help you out, commanders that command and squad leaders that lead. I suggest you go to the website, read the rules and standard operating procedures of the BF2 server, then join in tonight around 8PM EST and try to get in a squad with a |TG| tagged squad leader. 90% of the players use VOIP, just let them know you are new and they'll help you out. TG isn't for everyone, usually the younger, immature players seem to get filtered out pretty quickly, being unranked helps alot in this area.

After working in a cohesive squad with an organized command structure against an entire 32 player team of opponents doing the same thing, you'll realize why the mantra of tactical gamer is "The way it's meant to be played."

Look at it this way; if it weren't for us, there wouldn't be any cannon fodder for the people with 150,000 global points. I was a '42 player too, and I'm having trouble getting used to this one, but it's still fun for me.

In a little over a month of playing, I've learned two things.

One, not everything is a hack. There are some really, really sickeningly good players out there who are pinpoint shots and know the game inside and out.

Two, when you find one of those types of players on your team, let him do his thing without following him around like a puppy, but keep an eye on him and you'll learn something every round.
