Listening to VOIP with no microphone

Maybe this is a dumb question, but my grade 3 teacher once told me there were no dumb questions, so neener-neener.

I do not have a microphone, but I do have VOIP enabled in BF2, with the intention of at least being able to HEAR what everyone else is saying, especially squad leaders and commanders. However, I have yet to hear anyone say anything. Is VOIP used very much on the ranked servers? Granted, I've only been playing for a very, very short while, but I thought I would have heard something.

So I'm not sure if there is a problem with my configuration, options or whatever. Or maybe you can't hear VOIP if you don't have a microphone? Doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone shed some light?

I'm trying to improve my online play but it's really hard when all the other players are so good and I feel like I'm just a fifth wheel because I have no idea what they want me to do. BF2 is touted as a squad-tactics game but I have yet to see or be involved in any squad based tactics. Just people running around, grabbing vehicles and jumping up and down like bunny rabbits during gun fights. I was actually booted out of a squad for unknown reasons.

On that note, does anyone actually issue orders? I have yet to hear a single order get issued. No "attack here" or "defend here" or anything. What's the deal? I have a bad feeling there is some 'unspoken understanding' amongst online BF2 gamers that I am unaware of because I have never really played online before. Help??

VOIP is NOT used much on ANY public server for some reason. Most people use third party apps like TeamSpeak (myself included).

You know what...I don't know for sure if you disable VOIP in-game whether you still hear other messages. I always just assumed that disabling VOIP simply meant that you could not send outgoing speech. Guess I'd better find the real answer on that one

As far as orders go, I'm ALWAYS giving orders to my squad ..and for the most part, if I know the commander is doing a decent job, I'll accept his orders and pass them along to the team.

My squad was formed on the idea that everyone should use VoIP to organize the squad. If you come on to our server and join one of our squads, we will be using VoIP

Hey Dunder Chief, I know the feeling; I'm fairly new myself-maybe a little more experienced. Interesting thing the voice chat. I didn't set anything up in my game... maybe it came that way, I don't know, but I hear guys on the squads I join fairly often. One time I was riding in the machine gun turret of the tank that my squad leader was driving, and even though I couldn't answer he asumed I could hear, and was giving me instructions. Kinda cool. Anyway, make sure you keep an eye on the ever flowing typed messages on the left of your screen, If something is in green (I think) then it's someone in your squad... and maybe pointed at you.) I don't have any regular server yet (especially since PunkBuster has taken me out of the action, hopefully temporarily), I just kind of floated around to which ever one is the most populated map I can play with the lowest ping possable, then I find the best squad I can that isn't full yet (6players is full) and that is doing squad type participation (not usually riding around in a tanks or flying a jet or Blackhawk) then I basicly follow the leader. That has been my "boot camp", and I've learned alot by watching and following example.

Stick with it, keep your head down and don't get discouraged when you empty a magazing at someone and they turn around and take you out with one pop. It's all in the learning curve (and the upgraded weapons ).
