Quick and Easy Question Before I buy

I really fancy getting BF2 but had a problem with the Demo.
I have never used the WASD control system, I find it clumsy and unnatural to use. Therefore I always alter FPS controls to my own favourite combination which involves amongst other things the right mouse button to move forward.

HOWEVER, when trying to change to my system in the controls menu I kept getting error messages that the key I was trying to change was already assigned in common controls. Not just with he rgith mouse button but with others to. Try as I might I couldn't find the key I was trying to change in common controls or any other controls. Even deleting all the key assignments didn't work.

My question therefore is "Can I have whatever controls i want in the full version of the game, is this just a fault in the demo?"

If I can't alter the key config then i will not be buying the game.

    Any answers gratefully recieved.

    Cheers

I'm no expert but I think that

    a) you can change the controls but...

    b) A lot of people seem to bypass the graphical interface and do it directly in the config files in order to get exactly what they want.

There is a bug which occurs when you configure the RMB to move forward that prevents you from using the radio commands while moving but a fix has been discovered since.

Is that a relatively straightforward task in the config files. I am familiar with them for altering graphical settings etc, but never done it with controls.

        Yeah it's pretty easy really.

I've just asked a friend and he asid that he didn't have to edit any files in order to remap his files. But he did have to apply the bug-fix I mentioned as by default, when you press right-mouse button, the game won't accept any other keypresses until you leave go of it.

Hmm, just read that link you gave me, looks like it was a bug at some stage. i think I will get BF2 and give it a shot.
I couldn't believe the idiot on that thread having a go at folk using MB2 for forward. some folk including me obviously find this much easier to use so whats his problem.
Anyway thanks for the help, I'll give it a whirl. Best regards Moosehunter.

It still is. if you don't change the file in the post yourself then it ain't gonna work but it may get fixed in the next patch (1.2)

Good luck with the game !

Is there any inclination as to when 1.2 is likely to be released.

Also, I have looked at the other patches available. I take it i need to install 1.02 than 1.03 then 1.12. is that all there is at the moment or are there any others.
                  Cheers

Doubt it. :p They claimed that stuff was fixed yet I still have issues with some buttons....although they CAN be altered, the game still wants to use them in particular situations. -.-

I've had trouble with the default controls, and I too shun WASD (for the arrow keys, all hail the left handed! (as in left hand for the mouse, thus WASD makes absolutely zero sense to me)). Editting the .con file for the controls is fairly simple though. Might take you a few tries to get everything JUST right, but once you do, shouldn't be a problem at all. And hey, if you use the arrow keys, page up and page down are right there so you can answer people quickly. :p

I believe you can install 1.12 on it's own without installing 1.02 and 1.03 (at least it's what I did when I broke my vanilla BF2 when modding and reinstalled). There IS a new patch coming "soon" as demize says, but no one knows what that really means, save for God and maybe some sadomasochistic EA executives. :-P

Personally mate, i never played a game before BF42, which i got just before BF2, that used the wasd config. but i picked it up really easily, now its a second nature to me. When i attempt to write an essay these days i automatically grap those four keys. So you'll get used to it pretty quick, i reccommend single player to begin.

There isn't a date for the new patch and never has been. People are expecting it though within the next couple of weeks.

No need to touch the 'old' patches, it's always the latest one (1.12) that only needs to be installed.

                              Baggy Green
I have been playing FPS's for the past 10 years and never ever got on with WASD.
I use RMB forward with arrows for left right and backwards, Insert for jump, delete for crouch, home for zoom, end for use. Then pg up and pg down for lean left and right. Then any other keys suchs enter, shift on the right hand side of the keyboard. This means that i am not contantly hitting the wrong keys with my big clumsy fingers or being unable to find the one I want as it is lost in the midst of a load of other keys around it.
This works for me in single player and multiplayer on everything from BF42 to Call of duty 2 and even 3rd person such as Max Payne.
So WASD may work for you, it doesn't and never has for me, I won't be changing. Happy fragging.
