    very laggy ... please help

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and to Bf2. Everytime i join a server, there is horrendous lag. It dissapears after about a minute, and after i turn the mouse 360 degrees and move about a bit.

I have 1gig of memory and a 6600GT. My connection is 2Mbit broadband.

I'm guessing it is not my connection because my ping always displays at around 20-40. So, this must be my memory.

My question is this. Is 1gig memory not enough for Bf2. I am not going to buy any more memory yet, so are there any quick fixes i could go for (textures, sound, etc)?

    Many thanks

Adding another gig of memory will remove all the lag. I and tens of dozens of others speak from experience on this.

Until then, you'll just need to lower the settings. (You'll still get lag, but it will minimize it to a degree.)

Edit: And welcome to the forums! :)

Thanks for that. I guess 1gig is not enough any more, at least for this game. I will change the settings until the next pay slip comes through. :)

The 6600GT is PCI-E. However, i doubt it is the card because i can hear the harddisk loading features like crazy during this period of lag.

I haven't updated punkbuster, i shall give that a shot. I thought that it would update automatically, am i wrong?

            Thanks for all your help.

edit: I have just updated punkbuster through pbsetup. I guess it doesn't update automatically.

              To correct cpt.pingu's link: http://websec.evenbalance.com/downlo...ws/pbsetup.exe.

Interesting theory. I updated PB after I upgraded my RAM, so please report back if this does indeed remove your lag. (I'm very skeptical, but everyone's system is different, so it may work for you. <shrug>)

Reporting back. I updated punkbuster, but the lag is still there. Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work in my case. I tried 2 or 3 servers too, just incase it was a slow downstream connection.

I will consider investing in more RAM, it seems wise. During that 1st laggy minute, i do die quite often, or i find myself slammed into a wall when trying to drive a vehicle (and no, it's not my bad driving).

                Thanks for your quick replies

I don't have BF2:SF. The lag happens on every map, and only for the first minute. Then everything is ok.

The weird thing is, i never got any lag on the demo. I know it's just a demo, but it was a 64 player map, so memory usage should be the same, shouldn't it?

make sure there is nothing else is running when you play bf2. did you try turning your setting down?

its the new punkbuster update, type this in console

                        pb_sleep 500

it will make it run a lot better, but not perfect... I hope they remove this update or release some sort of hotfix.

it seems to work well for some people, and not so well for others. I guess you're one of them.

All I can say is, its extremely lagged/jerky movement/unplayable when I dont have pb_sleep set to 500. If you check the other popular bf2 forums, you will see people are having similar problems, all because of this new pb update.
