No, not at all.
I flew with a joystick on planes for some time, then Sabo convinced me to go back to mouse + kb, and it works muuuch better than a joystick for me now
Joystick for choppers = utter useless. Either mouse + keyboard, or keyboard only.

You've never seen me fly a helicopter it seems.

I say to all those that don't like them, good for you. Gives me a better chance of winning. :)

I recommend, and after plenty of trials with different sticks: Saitek Cyborg Evo.

I admit it took me about 1week to get the full use of a joystick, this was back in BF: Vietnam and BF1942 DC, where it actually took a little more "skill" to hover or even fly a helicopter. I also had my doubts, but I'm almost dependant on the joystick now. I could never hover in a helicopter before the joystick, and that is the most crucial aspect to flying one.

I know a guy by the name of "longfellow" and he's one of the best helo pilots I've seen to date, and he uses kb/mouse, so all in all, it's obviously a matter of preference and practice (in singleplayer please) hehe

erm NATURALLY I'm only talking about my personal experience.

I'm just trying to give my view, which obviously differs from yours (for example), so that the initial poster is aware of the fact that a joystick will not make him magically better.

and like I said, in real helo sims I fly stick, too.

PS: I never found hovering hard with either method for some reason...?

i got a joystick, and i fly like 10 times better now. but thats only in planes
i fly choppers better with keyboard only, but ive been practicing using the joystick, i kind of mix up both keyboard and joystick when im in a chopper. definitely get a joystick for planes.
a cheap good one, is the logitech extreme 3d pro
its the one i got, and its nice

I can do immelman turns on my joystick can't do it with a mouse. The reason is that a joystick gives constant input just by holding the stick in place while a mouse requires constant dragging which if you are not careful you will drag on both X and Y axes and lose stability. Hence it is near impossible to do clean aerial maneuvers with a mouse.

The joystick allowed me to fly airplanes really well and helicopters with a lot of control. If you get Logtiech's sticks they are smooth with the resistance you would find on a real like plane clutch.

I always found it difficult to pull the Huey in a hover position with the kb+mouse, and in BF1942 DC it was practically impossible. It took a crazy amount of time for me to realize the helis in BF1942 DC were more like jets than helicopters. :)

As for the comments, I just meant that with a little practice, I found that the joystick gave me such a crazy advantage over the kb+mouse, and that I would never go back.
