Re: Custom comp.
You could definitely go all out with that amount of money and get just about top of the range everything.
things you may overlook as not so important. Get a good PSU (if the box doesn't come with one) Antec, Tagan, Enermax, Hiper, Seasonic, Thermaltake & Coolermaster are good manufacturers.
Also if you get an LCD screen make sure the refresh rate is less than 10ms
edit: incase you were thinging of just upgrading youll be better off building a new PC.Comment

NForce4 Mobo with SATA, RAID and SLI support
Depending on budjet, An Athlon64... even the cheepest will do a great job
2 Gigs of ram (its really cheep now)(NOT VALUE RAM... go for QUALITY)
2 SATA hard Drives Running on RAID
Depending on budjet A good or Fantastic Videocard by ATI or Nvidia
(I would suggest at least an nvidia 6800 or ati X800)
(keep in minde that with a SLI support mobo, you can Later on add a second card to double your Video Performance)
A DVD Burner.... (pnuts)
Make sure that your case has a QUALITY Power Supply such as Antec
Thats about it...
and that should cost you less then 1800 CanadianComment
