    help with Silent Hunter 3

Just started playing what seems to be an awesome game but i'm having trouble very early on. In fact, its the torpedo training thats giving me a hard time. I've hit the other ships from every angle imaginable including 90 degrees, from varying distances of 100m to 2000m and i usually get the same results. Doink, it bounces off without detonating. What am i doing wrong??
I would say that about 80% of my torps do this and anyone whose played this game knows you dont have very many torps in the training level. I usually run out way before i get my 4 needed kills.
Any help at all would be appreciated as i'm finding this to be embarrassing. I swear i saw sailors on the enemy ships pointing and laughing at me.
    Thanks.

It's annoying for me somehow I find it damn hard to hit the ships when they are moving, I aim the torp at it, it misses and if I aim it a lil in front of the ship it either goes past the ship or just misses again.

Go to the pag provided by drunken Pirate. Lots of helpful stuff.

        A few other things:

What realism level are you using? This affects ## of duds etc.

Are you you using magnetic or impact setting for the torps. (This also tends to play a role)

If you tend to miss a lot of shots, ensure your doors are open before firing (Took me a little bit to figure this out as my torps allways hit behind what I was aiming at or missed all together.

I also tend to "Unlock" the target from the periscope and select where I want the torp to hit (as the periscope tends to just select center mass which is not allways the most damaging location).

And quite frankly.... early in the war... there were a lot of torpedo problems and a lot of duds

However the link provided by drunken pirate will have more/better indepth help for you

I play it too, and have turned off duds. Sometimes its hard enough hitting the target let alone having it bounce off! Im on about 60% realism I think which suits me fine.

Thanks for the heads-up DP. That was indeed a helpful forum. I now have graduated with all excellants from the naval academy and have completed 3 patrol missions netting me 49,000 tons.
I didnt really know what to expect from this game and i was pleasantly surprised to find it had the dynamic weather and day/night cycle. I've always been a fan of details like those.

And it had my heart thumping as i managed to escape a two destroyer patrol who had seen me and was in a search pattern right over me! With only 1 aft torpedo in stock i had no chance of fighting (it was stormy so the deck gun was out) so i had to run silent at 3knts and pray like hell. Couldnt dive deep cause the depth was only 24 meters. With a little less hull paint and a shaken crew i managed to get away! Felt very rewarded cause of this and i cant wait till the next time.

            Cheers for the help fellas.

ON a side note (Glad to hear you are enjoying the game). Some of the mods offered on that site add even more realism (Be it graphic/historic/ or game play... Check them out.) It may take a game you like and make it more so.

              -enjoy

500m-1500m is optimal range. If you get really close they'll always bounce out - stay at least 500m away at all times. They'll bounce off left and right. Try to do a direct 90 degree shot right on their side, should take 'em down. I used to get duds all the time when I went in close, now I can't remember the last time I shot a dud. I play on 0% realism, though. That suits me fine.

I played on almost full reality setting, with only complex firing off. I think that it's nice to have dud torpedos as it increases the excitement :)

Re: help with Silent Hunter 3

I'm a newbie to this game and as i've been getting more familiar with the controls i've been turning the reality up. I too like having the fail factor of torpedoes but was getting frusterated in the naval academy when 8 of 10 would dud out. Kept trying and learning and finally figured it out.
This game is far better than i expected from a sub sim and downloading the hi-res textures makes this game that much better.
The only thing i dont like is the missions all seem to be the same. Go to sector xxxx and patrol 24 hrs. i've had it where i engage enemies on my way to patrol and by the time i get there, my ammo stores are completely spent. But i still go just to get the mission complete. Wish there were at least a few different missions like attacking certain objects or defending certain objects but oh well. I cant have everything to my liking.
