Easiest to pick up: G36C
G36C's stats are similar to most single player FPS's basic assualt rifle: accurate, fast, manuverable, but doesn't do a lot of damage. Half life's MP5 resembles it, HL2's MP7 resembles it, HALO's assualt rifle resembles it (sort of), and Q3/Q4's assualt rifle also resemble it.
Basically, anyone who knows how to shot a gun in FPS can pick up G36
Most diffcult to master: PKM/G3
I compare this gun to AK47 of CS. Although PKM is supposed to be poweful (just like AK47 of CS), most people can't seem to shot well with it. Understanding of ingame tragetory is a must, and PKM becomes a beast once a user masters it.
Three words: Automatic Sniper machinegun
Same thing can be said about G3, which is functionaly similar to the PKM except bullet count.
Most mainstream: AK101
It feels somewhat like the M4 in CSS, isn't as diffcult to master as the PKM, and is sufficently powerful that most players use it. Firepower is sufficient but just doesn't feel as concentrated as a firepower player would want it to be (personally, 38 damage is my minimum)
Best stats overral/most potential: G36E
I always love the G36 family. G36E is a perfect example of the best balanced weapon in BF2, extremely good accuracy (easily a factor better than all assualt rifles), fair damage (32) and good handling makes it a potentially powerful weapon in all situations.
Most overrated weapon: DAO12
I am sorry, but this gun is only good at Karkand. I mean it is unique and satisifying to use, however it loses its power at any range. Frankly, in a good player's hand, AT SMG can be just as powerful.
Best run and gun weapon: PP-19 (possibly P90 soon)
Some people say ATSMGs are pea shooters, but I think otherwise. With almost no accuracy penalty while running (1.3 vs. 1.1 prone) and extremely fast ROF (800, fastest in game, on par with M249), PP-19
has excellent potential for run-and-gun applications, just get close to the enemy and hold down the trigger! Manuverablity of this gun allows the user to use complex manuvers to confuse the victim (one of my favoriate from UT is to circle around the enemy)
All told, try to start using SMG, it will often surprise you. I remembered I sucked with SMG back in the day, but as my overall skill progress, so is my SMG skill
Worst weapon in its class: Type 95 MG
Type 95 MG just sucks on paper comparing to all other machine guns. Worst sustained fire accuracy, 100 round magzine and low damage made it rather undesirable.
Worst weapon overall: Type 85 SMG
If you don't plan to run and gun, don't use it.
Most under-appreciated weapon: AK47
AK47 is much better than AK101, as it can kill armored targets faster (by one shot), and has the same single shot accuracy (that's all it matters, because when you starting to go full auto you are hopefully in a CQB situation). However, most people fail to notice how good AK47 is.
Most awkward weapon: MK3A1
It doesn't suck, it just doesn't fit the whole weapon balance table. There are very few situation where the MK3A1 is required. Actually, the only situation I can think of is to exit the vehicle for a split second and blast any ATer around. MK3A1 is meant to be used in conjunction with vehicles, you may want to rush in behind armor, than blast the person in close range.
I may decide to write strategy guide about a few weapons in BF2 if my classes don't kill me.
