i was wanting to know how to stop some procceses form running at startup on windows 2000. we have a spare computer that has not much ram so it loads slowly. i tried msconfig and it said it could not be found

Sorry..missed this one.
Open Regedit:
-start->run->regedit.exe
Then browse through the registry to the following keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run
You'll find your offending entries there.Comment

Elementary users going directly into RegEdit isnt a GREAT idea.
I'd suggest run -> MSconfig. From there you can close start up programs, services, and even select what mode you want XP/2000 to start in.
NOTE: 2000 doesnt come with the MSconfig utility, but you can find it by googling for it. Download and run it and it will work.Comment

then u want to go to the services and startup tab and uncheck stuff u KNO u dont need..make sure by looking up each one in google...and tehn restart..and when u restart and something popus up..check the box and hit ok...(if u dont i think it keeps on popping up)Comment

MSCONFIG is a clunky way of doing it.
I think playing around with Services.msc is a LOT more dangerous that looking through 2 registry keys.

He will corrupt his registry if he screws around with regedit too much.Comment

If he's interested enough to take control over startup applications, he's interested enough to learn about regedit
