Help - setting up a dedicated server

Hi I assume this has been covered many times so could someone send me a link on how to do this?

Bear with me I'm not a expert on such things.

I have 2 machines plugged into a NetGear router (dg834g).
My 1st machine (the powerful one I play bf2 on) ip is 192.168.0.2
My 2nd machine which is old but I thought I could try setting up server is on 192.168.0.4.

I want the 2nd machine to act as a server to my main machine and to mates (or whoever on internet).

I ran the server on 2nd machine (from advanced settings - run server) and can only see it if I join local from my main machine.
I'd like it to appear publicly on the multiplayer map tho.

I tried putting in my adsl ip address (as reported by router) into the server ip and then the interface ip fields and then both but I get an exception.

PS. Both machines have windows firewall running and I believe the router has hardware firewall. I know nothing about port forwarding etc.

Could someone give me a poke in the right direction on setting this stuff up.
    Yes I know I am a smacktard!

    Thanks guys...

Ok I'll steer you in the right direction.

Download the unranked 1.12 server files. Then install it. Now this is to create and unranked server but it will have no bots. If you want bots then simply start a single player game on your older machine.

Now you need to open up ports in your router. Follow the instructions on this link which is relevant to your router make/model. http://www.portforward.com/english/r...tlefield_2.htm

    Client Ports:

    UDP 27900
    UDP/TCP 29900
    TCP 80
    TCP 4711
    TCP 29901
    UDP 1500-4999
    UDP/TCP 1024-1124
    UDP 28910
    UDP 16567
    UDP 55123-55125

    Hosting a Battlefield 2 Server
In order to host a Battlefield 2 server, you must have the following ports open in your firewall.

    Server Ports:

    UDP 27900
    UDP/TCP 29900
    TCP 80
    TCP 4711
    UDP 27901
    UDP 1500-4999
    UDP/TCP 1024-1124
    UDP 29900
    UDP/TCP 27900
    UDP 16567
    UDP 55123-55125

You will need to know the inside IP and the outside IP of the older machine you want to use as the server. To find your inside IP of your server click start/run type command hit enter. Then type ipconfig /all it will show your "inside" IP, simply type exit to get back to windows.

To find you outside IP goto www.whatismyip.com and it will display your outside IP which is what you need to give to your friends if they want to connect over the net.

Now for your BF2 machine to connect to the server it connects using the inside ip, but anyone else on the net you want to connect will use the outside ip. For them to connect to your server to play against bots, get them to connect using the IP directly. If its no bots it will show up in the server list as long as all ports for BF2 are open in your router and the firewalls give all access to BF2.

Then you should be good to go.

    Cheers

Woohoo, just disabled XP firewall on machine with svr on and it now appears in svr list.

Begs another question, am I now exposed to any internet type threats with these ports open or are they sort of harmless.

            Thanks.....

Re: Help - setting up a dedicated server

Most of the bf2 ports are harmless to leave open...that being said however...if someone wants into your LAN and you have ports open - they can get in.

If this is not something you are going to use all the time - I would just open them when you need them open.

With my linksys it is as easy as unchecking a check box to turn them on and off - it remembers them even when they are turned off so you do not have to re-enter all that crap again.

Hey thanks for that, good suggestion.

One last thing, can I kid bf2 svr into giving me 32/64 player maps even if say only 2 people are in there playing - oh and can you do me a piccy and host it please (haha ok maybe not the last bit).

                Thanks...

Re: Help - setting up a dedicated server

Ok I'm getting there, got large maps now.

My friends say they can't see my server in Multiplayer list (I can from my primary machine), so they have to use my external IP address to access. Anyone know why this is please?
On my router I have made all the 'server' ports (not client) accessible inbound (outbound is set to all/any/allow so didn't alter that).

Also regarding the server graphic, does it have to be inside square brackets or anything as it's being hosted and I can access from web but nothing appears when map loads.

                  Again much appreciated thanks...

Re: Help - setting up a dedicated server

They cant use your servers local IP because 192.168.X.X is reserved for small area networks. The numbers are used by your router/switch/hub and therefore are not seen by your friends on the internet.

Your external (WAN) IP Address is the IP for your ENTIRE home network, with the local (LAN) IPs breaking down into individual machines.

Lets say your WAN IP is 65.65.65.65, and your server is 192.168.0.1 on your Local Area Network.

Your friends type in 65.65.65.65 and that points to your network, your router then routes their BF2 server joining to port 16567 (or whatever port you used) and your router knows that port 16567 is in use by 192.168.0.1 (Your server) so it lets your friends pass through the router, to your local machine server.

                    Hope that explains it.

Re: Help - setting up a dedicated server

Sorry I didn't explain myself properly, what you are saying is what I meant by 'my external address' (as opposed to internal address 192.168.0.x).
So I am talking about the address as say reported by whatismyip.com, if I give that to my friends they can indeed join my server over internet, but they have to do it via the connect via IP option, they do not see my server in the multiplayer list?

So question is why can't they see my server from the Mutliplayer list.

                      Sorry for confusion CaptJordus.

Re: Help - setting up a dedicated server

I beleive the multiplayer list that gathers when you click "join internet" tab is a qeue of the GameSpy server that pings BF2 servers that are pointed to it.

Im sure there is some method of directing to that server to yours will show up, but i dont know exactly how.

Until then, your friends will simply have to type in the IP address to see it, because the Gamespy qeue server isnt qeurying your machine.

                          You will need static IP's
You will need a firewall that supports NAT.
In your firewall you have to configure your Private address to a Public address

                          such as

                          192.168.0.1 =>64.201.168.55

If you are running on dynamic addresses... its gona be a pain.

                          You might already know that...

Funnily enough some guy joined my server and said he saw it using no filters. hmmmmm.
CaptJordus or anyone, do you wanna see if you can see my server?
Its - Jaz's Place. Appreciate any clues. I'm sure punkbuster is laterst ver.

PermanentMarker thanks for info - I'm past that stage, indeed I set both my machines to static IP's before starting on this quest.
