    Choose a server screen icons

Whilst choosing a server, what do the icons on the left mean? Please can you post a screen shot of each one when discribing what they mean, it would be a whole lot easier for you and me

    Cheers

Re: Choose a server screen icons

Ignore the text at the top of the sshot, I am just reusing one I already had linked up from a different discussion.

    Starting from the left:

    1) Server Health. You probably won't find any in the green, this is an indicator of how the cpu/ram load is doing on the server. Most server providers stack more servers on a box than should be allowed, because they take the load into account of just a full server but not for map changes (which really chews up resources). Having a great ping on the server and experiencing lag? Probably the server box being overworked.

    2) What operating system the server is on. The little 'Computer Tower' is for Win, 'Tux the Penguin' is for Linux, 'Grey 64' is for Linux 64 bit. There is an icon for Win 64, just haven't seen it yet.

    3) The red '2' is a box on plain old BF2, a green '2' is a server running BF2:SF.

    4) The ^ icon means it is an Official Ranked Server.

    5) The grey 'headset' means Voice Over IP (VOIP) enabled.

    6) The red/blue/person icon means PunkBuster is enabled.

    7) The green monitor means 'Content Check' is enabled. A lot of people believe this means that BattleRecorder is running, they're full of sh*t. Servers running Linux don't have 'Content Check' running, probably was never programmed for that OS or is broke.

    And there you have it

Now, playing on a server with Content Check disabled will greatly reduce your map change times, but, it opens up the possibility of playing with cheaters to be more likely. PunkBuster only really scans what is loaded into memory by default (I have an email from PB that confirms this, perks of being a league admin) but does not scan the integrity of the games files. The Content Checking on the servers picks up PB's slack.

That's interesting about the "Content Check" icon. I didn't know that. Do you have a source, or did you just deduce that on your own?

It would certainly explain the mystery as to why on some servers the "Verifying Content Data..." is nearly instantaneous. :)

Could any of these be to do with the "unmodified content" error?

Do you have SF installed? I only ask out of curiosity because I get that errror frequently now, too, but I only started getting it after I installed SF.

I contend it is some sort of new bug because it always happens randomly after I have already played several maps and/or rounds on a server, i.e., I passed the previous "content checks," so it is illogical for it to think I have somehow magically modified the content while I was playing the game. (It's even happened on a Karkand only server, proof that the map data couldn't have possibly changed.)

I have SF installed and I go to content checking servers, yet this has never happened to me.

Maybe, but what's your point? There are numerous threads about this issue, so it's not imaginary.

For instance, I could counter that by saying that in the seven months that I have played BF2 (almost daily), I have never once encountered the infamous Red Tag bug. (Truly! That has never happened to me.) Does that mean that the problem doesn't exist?

Well, I knew this from the previous BF games, same icons are used for them. For the people that didn't believe me, I just told them to 'edit a file in the game and see for yourself', none of them ever took me up on that test and just criticized me until this link popped up from someone else who didn't believe me and said something to the effect of 'Unless EA says so, I'm not going to believe you' (he never did say 'oops, sorry for calling you a crackpot lol):

As for the guys with the modified content kick, I got that several times after SF was installed and the uninstalled from my comp. Just try reinstalling the latest game patch a few times, for some reason it seems that either the patch isn't being updated properly (random issue maybe), or that SF just mucks it up a bit. But yah, if it didn't patch the game properly, content check will kick you because of it.

And just as a side note, when you go to a server with 'Content Check' disabled, it will still say that it is doing it for a few seconds. By default, your game goes right to that graphic after mapload before the server tells it not to run it. So don't confuse that with having a 10 second check time unless you know for sure the server has it enabled and your still achieving this, if you are, I am sure alot of people will want to know the specifics of your comp specs lol.

For what's it worth, I beleive you. I never really thought about it before, and it was interesting learning something new after having looked at that icon for so many months now. :p

(OT, but related to I still learning about the mechanics of the game's interface, I have yet to figure out how to initiate a kick vote. :p)

                      I'll say it again.

FOR THOSE WITH SF GETTING unmodified content errors.

Upon installation of SF, you MUST go back and re-install the 1.12 patch, even if you did so before. It is clearly stated in the patch notes, which I doubt anyone reads nowadays.
