    Sniper rounds hit invisible objects?

Does anyone else find it annoying that you can clearly see an enermies head and shoulders in your sniper scope yet when you fire you hit some invisible wall or ground?

Same thing happens with Eryx and SRAW but I can almost forgive that, as I don't like those classes much :p

thats happened to me a couple of times, you see the guy through the scope, you line up for the perfect head shot and you bullet end up hitting the wall you half hideing behind.

Yes, exactly, it's a pain in the ass!

I'm more surprised (and impressed) when I can shoot through stuff that looks like you should be able to shoot through, and you actually can. Like the pipes in Karkand right at the beginning. Or through a fence.

If you think about what games used to be like, and how fast they're evolving, it's only a matter of time before they get to the point where the physics and expectations match the visuals.

For example: You can duck down behind a tank and scoot over to the front, and see peoples legs. But you can't shoot their legs because there is an invisible "wall" there. It's a damage mesh, and is everybit as solid as a visual wall.

One day you'll be able to shoot at a wire mesh fence and there'll be advanced physics that cause richochet, etc. For now, we have to wait for engine upgrades to address these problems one at a time.

          Well said.

Many games have already surpassed that stage, and the benchmark continues to be reset with each relesase. Some are just truly amazing.

There already is. The Source engine has some really good physics on it but its not just the physics its also the models some of the models for BF2 are done well but not all of them which means a lot of the models end up having invisible "walls"

I agree. It's weird when Dice says that they can't, for example, make the carriers navigatable because it'd cause complete server lag, yet GTA San Andreas has a train that circles the entire map, and hundreds of cars, and thousands of people, plus weather patterns and passage of time; all which you can interact with without hurting your framerates.

I can't believe that the First Strike mod is being built on the BF2 engine!

And HL2 definately runs better and is more amazing as far as physics goes and environment interaction goes. Battlefield 2 certinally doesn't have many games beat with any of those aspects.

However, I can understand where Battlefield 2 runs into problems since it is primarily a multiplayer based game, and thus doesn't have the ability to focus attention. Single player games can focus attention on the immediate area to boost peformance, basically putting the rest of the map to sleep. But BF2 has to keep every bit of the map awake so that it's all available.

That was slightly off topic, but not much so. Making the invisible coding match the visible coding, perfectly, is an extremely complicated procedure. I personally think that Dice/EA dropped the ball with Battlefield 2, but it worked out enough for us to enjoy it. Unfortunately, it's given itself a pretty bad name as far as what it promised and then what it actually delivered. All this, and still a vast majority of us suffer peformance hits.

Hopefully Battlefield 3 will be an amazing experience. I hope Dice/EA learned a lot from BF2. You can be sure they definately don't want to hve to release a new patch every two or three months. It's just extra work and no extra compensation. A game makers dream would be to have a finished product from day one.
