Well, I come here every day looking for a solution to this problem and have yet to find one.
I can play BF2 on medium with no problem at all (high on single player), but every single time I play, eventually...sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 2 or more hours, the framerate suddenly goes to ****. The catch is, it only drops when I look at certain areas. I could be looking at the carrier for example with no fps drop at all, no problems. Then 5 minutes later, when this crap starts up, I'll look at the same area and my fps drops to the single digits (at least it looks like it). I can look straight up at the sky and my fps is total crap. Then I look, say, behind me, and everything goes back to normal, even when 100 things are blowing up and ****'s flying everywhere the framerate will be fine. But as soon as I turn around again to look at that horribly complex flat brick wall, Im moving in slow motion once again. Even though everything worked PERFECT 5 minutes before, it justs randomly decides it doesnt like a few portions of ANY map and drops my fps. Once it does it, the only way to return everything back to normal is to restart the game completely, then wait for it to begin again. This is driving me INSANE. This has happened with every single nvidia driver released since before this summer plus a few random drivers Ive tried. Oh yeah, and the game constantly freezes up as well. During loading and playing. It also crashes to desktop while loading quite a bit too.
I use driver cleaner everytime I put new drivers in, Ive defragged, Ive eliminated spyware with 3 different programs, Ive checked my memory for errors (I had 2 errors in about 3-4 hours +) Ive tried tons of drivers, for my video and sound. Ive also updated my motherboards driver. I cleaned my registry. Ive tried every single performance tip thats been posted on these boards. Nothing has changed, and none of these things made any sort of difference at all. Ive tried every variation of video and sound settings in game and it STILL does it no matter what. I've cleaned all the heatsinks and fans.

AMD 3000+ (32bit) 2.17 Ghz
1 gig of ram
Geforce 6800 vanilla
nvidia motherboard and sound
DSL 3MB a second (thats what SBC tells me at least)
DVD rom 16x
160 GB hard drive
480+ w Antec power supply ( I forget the specific number)
