Crashing to desktop when attempting to start/join any game.

I've finally managed to get BF2 to load up correctly, and now it crashes every time I try to join a server, create a server, or quickmatch. It waits about 4 seconds before crashing back to the desktop.

All my drivers are up to date, and my machine is perfectly capable of running it (before I formatted it ran fine). Every other game I have runs perfectly, even the ones more graphically intensive than BF2.

Could anyone help me solve this really irritating problem? :)

mine was CTD right after the 'joining game' thing popped up in the multiplayer browser... but i knew it was my video card drivers... for some reason all the newer drivers wont install on my comp tried 81.89 then 81.85 then 77.77 which finally worked. (this was after a full format/reinstall xp due to it crashing)

now i can play again

finally after 6 months of waiting did i reinstall and patch my game (BF2) with most wierd and screwed method... but to my dismay i have the crash-to-desktop-after-the-splash-screen problem just like you do. I suspect that there is something to do with system drivers, direct x drivers, and the ATI Radeon 9500/9700 pro video card - looks like EA supports invidia and hates ATI.
