This is partly due to the fact that for some reason BF2 wont run with patch 1.12 on my current pc. But I was going to upgrade this year anyway and the bonus made up my mind

Okay, mate, a few things, you want BF2 maxed res, aa, af, get the GTX version, it will do your more benefit than a higher cpu and a lesser vidcard. Besides you can overclock the cpu:

Change the cpu to a 3200+ overclock it to a 3500+
Drop back to 1 GB of ram (2x512mb for dual action)
Get a 7800GTX instead. It will get you everything on max res/aa/af

Enjoy, should be around the same price but with better overall performance. You can always send me a small fee. The 3200+ overclocked is fast enough for the GTX, especially in BF2.

I am so very very tempted to go for the 7800GTX and keep the rest as is. But we are talking £230 versus £330 (give or take), and the THG....

As for the DVD drive speed, 52x CD, 16x DVD (it is an LG combi drive - I have an older one that I have had for 3 years with 0 probs so I reckon it is fine. I dont want loads of disc drives taking up space and power)

A gt should be sufficiant, i mean i have 6800gt and 2 gigs of ram and i max out bf2 , aa, res, everything.

ANd yes you most definatly need 2 gigs of ram.

I have a BFG 7800GT OC, Amd Athlon 64 3500+ and 2 gig of RAM and it runs as smooth as a hell, fully maxed out

That looks good, stick with that ram, you need 2gbs. I'd also get a new hd, the speed increase should be good.

Your original specs/choices were 100% perfect!

Definately get 2x1024 ram...don't you think maybe 6 months to a year from now you'd want that 2nd gig if you don't get it now?
It seems 99.9% of people who went from 1 gig to 2 gigs for BF2 noticed a HUGE difference...except Darksniper who remains obstenant despite the overwhelming number of claims otherwise including a Producer of the damn game itself who declared in plain english that max settings will want a couple gigs of ram.

If you don't get 2 gigs now, then you'll be stuck having 4x512 at 2Tcr when you do finally decide you need it...not a huge deal, but one you can take care of by buying 2x1024.

Also, there is no need to waste the extra money on a GTX when the GT does 90% of what a GTX can do...for 75% or less of the money. You can sell the card for closer to what you paid for it when a better card comes out a scant 6 months later...

Lastly, his advice about OC'ing a 3200 to a 3500 isn't so bad, but I'd rather have the extra 512k L2 cache.

Don't change anything from what you wrote in your original post.

I play BF2 maxed with less...

2x1024 Corsair Value
x800xl 256mb

All settings HIGH
AA 6x
but...I play at a res of 1024x768. So your hardware choices above would definately play the same fps as mine at HIGHER reses.

My brother with the same system plays perfectly at 1152x864...so I still have a little room for increase.

all done and bf2 now works with 1.12!!!!!!
