New vid card and motherboard and now BF2 crashes on start

have had the game for a while, but the other day i installed a new motherboard and videocard (which required a full reformat etc etc)

BF2 installed with no problem, but whenver i launch it .. the splash screen pops up for a slit second.. then it goes away.. a few sec later i get the dreaded: "BF2.exe HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO CLOSE.." etc etc you know the deal..

i searched on here a bit and tried the idea of deleting My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles.. but that didnt work..

oh yea, system specs are:

MSI K8N Neo4/SLI motherboard

Radeon XT700 PCI Express card

AMD Athlon X2 3800+ dual core processor..

any ideas..?

ive tried reinstalling the game? updating drivers... and all that jazz..

no luck.. and half the reason i upgraded my rig was so i could run this game maxxed out.. now i cant even start it.. DOH!!!

have you installed service pack 2?

also is your video card 128mb(prbly is just making sure)

Also, you probably already know this, but you must have microsoft .net framework installed in order to update your ATI display drivers.

Also, ^^ what he said, make sure you've got SP2 + all updates installed.

Also, some drivers ARE NOT FRIENDLY to having antivirus/firewall/etc. running while you're installing them.

You probably are already aware of these things (since you're installing MOBO's, reformatting, etc.), but I thought I'd throw them out there. Sometimes we forget little things.

So the ONLY things that are different about your system now are the motherboard and video card?

You're using the same RAM, CPU, HDD, and sound card as before and you were playing BF2 fine?

new MOBO has a SB live integrated card.. so video card, mobo, and sound are different..


same setup runs the demo just fine..

and yea i download the update.. made no difference.

Have you tried disabling the sound card?

I'm just trying to rule things out...

Not true you only need .net if you install the drivers with the catalyst control panel.

also you can install em fine anyway you just get a little CLI.EXE error at startup...

what win version are you using 32bits xp or 64bits xp i know that i cant even use the installer under win64 so if you use win64 i would highly recommend switching back to the 32bits version anyway so far i have been running both of them for the last month and i cant say i notice anything special with the 64bit as no apps or almost no apps make use of it, farcry is running faster under 64bit if you apply the 64bit patch to the game

all the drivers anf new frmework has been installed, am on 32bit XP and all that crap..

i guess i could disable my sound card.. but then what.. even if it works.. i get to play the game with no sound?

No you don't, you just need it for the ATI control center applet, the drivers actually work fine with out it.

Did you reinstall windows? or just plug in your HD to the motherboard?

yep. to see if it was a hardware problem with the game engine..


well i just reinstalled windows again.. aswell as all drivers etc etc..

crashes with base install (off the DVD) aswell as with the patch..

splash screen displays for 1/2 sec or so.. then nothing.. then error report..

running out of ideas pretty quick
