Ailing Engineer and the upcomming patch.

I’ve been trying and trying to redeem the engineer class and play it as more of an aggressive cqc ground pounding class.

I understand that an engineer is effective during organized team play in armored convoys. But I’ve been trying to be more Rambo shotgun in the face/mines on your hood type class.

We all know the mine/punish system on the Pub servers. So I’ve been using mines offensively. Running and jump tossing them on to tanks. Last night I got five kills this way taking out a tank and an apc all at once. After I started using this method I was like “Man this engineer thing aint half bad.” One mine will take out any vehicle. That’s better than C4.

Soon with the new patch I will be unable to jump toss anything. Thus using the “offensive” mine will no longer be viable and I will have to go back to laying mines down for my team mates to roll/punish me.

Don’t get me wrong. I like a lot of the proposed changes in the upcoming patch. I’m just bummed about the ailing engineer class, and yet another blow to it’s arsenal.

I use to have so many toys to choose from (BF42, BFV). Now it’s so limited. I mean an engineer should have as much gear as Batman. You would think when special forces came out, of all the classes that would get some gadgets it would be the engineer. But alas….

Re: Ailing Engineer and the upcomming patch.

Hello, this is my first post here.

I do not know any people from the BF2 community... however we might have killed each other.... hahaha

I believe the engineer class should be given more task and abilities. By definition, combat engineers are not battle oriented. They are trained to fix vehicles, structures and build fortifications.

I believe the engineer class should be able to (additionally from what it does now):

    1) Locate and clear minefields
    2) Clear C4 sticks as well as claymores
    3) Build booby traps
    4) Use new class specific vehicles such as movable bridges
    5) Sabotage enemy resources (Artillery and also UAV)
    6) Sabotage enemy airfields
    7) Sabotage vehicles

These tasks would allow engineers to contribute to the team without having to actually engage in combat, since we already established that it is a SUPPORT class. That way engineers would have things to do and be able to get points by helping the team, at the same time providing additional defense to bases. These new task would still go along the lines of paper-scissors-rock attitude of the game since you would need another engineer to clear a booby trap for example.

Personally, I belive that the game should reward greatly team effort and support missions as to promote unity and teamwork.

    What do you think?

Mines better than C4 as an offensive measure towards tanks? That's a strecth. :p You also forgot to mention shooting your shotgun while bunnyhoppying.

Er, anyway. Maybe the engineer's direct combat capabilities will be worse in v1.2, but not being able to destroy mines with explosives (almost completely defeats the point of landmines if you ask me, fortunately most pub players don't know this) will no doubt increase the engineer's usefulness as a support player. No doubt that engi will still be the least used class, even with tank whores.

BS every tank whore knows that in order to spawn camp the best you need to be an engineer.

But how many tank whores can there be on a given map? Well, I guess I'm thinking of the smaller maps because some 64-player maps have tons of armor. Anyway, the least common infantryman will probably be the engineer. Ok, that's still debatable, but truth is, they're hard to come by on foot.

Yeah, I'm trying to get as much of my mining/grenading out of the way now. That will be a missed feature.

Atleast American vehicles on Karkand will be easily contained since they can no longer just blow up mines on the entrance to the city (they will need to drive off road).

I'm thinking we'll get a decent engineer unlock in one of the booster packs, such as a rifle or something so we have some range. Really, engineers are support, like you say, and should never be far from a decent ranged weapon. This could be a fixed mg, a Vodnik (for the mg), or ofcourse a tank/apc.

Re: Ailing Engineer and the upcomming patch.

there is nothing like placing mines on armour and then having to wait for the driver to commit suicide, far more exciting than c4. You'll still be able to jump up onto the vehicle and then place the mine- but that does mean death- although it is nice to sit on a tank while it trys to cap a flag as they cant seem to work out where you disappeared to.
I think the jackhammer is the perfect weapon for the engineer (in the game anyway) as to place a mine offensivly in enemy territory you have to do some face to face shooting most of the time (as the best mining is at vehicle spawns behind the front line) or when finding the hiding spec op that took out the arty- behind sandbags usually. When repairing it is handy to have a short range powerful weapon as they always think your an easy knife kill. The only time youd need a ranged weapon is when your no where near the action, damaged armour will be dead by the time it gets back to your position (cant plan when and where it will get shot and you arnt giving it a routine oil change, your needed there and then) and your mines are useless when placed no where near the action, essentially thats waisting the abilitys of the class, may as well play sniper. The class is nothing like its real life equivilant, neither is the game.
              The biggest problems with the class are;
              1. it needs protection when repairing in the field, tanks dont generally blow smoke to hide you (or realise that you will be on the left or right of the tank so when they drive off they always turn first and squish you). Engineer does depend on team work to be effective when played as true support.
              2. For the risk and time of repairing you get very few points.
              3. They always punish, even if your were removing your mines when they ran you over.
              4. You can only fix, why cant you unfix enemy assets etc.
              5. Mines seem to have an arming time (that that might be a sync thing), if you need to be in the middle of the road you should be able to instantly defend yourself from being run over.
              6. You cant accept a repair job, armour therefore doesnt know that you dont mind taking five minutes out of your life if they come to you, instead the burden is on the commander to waste supply drops and means the commander would usually get more repair points than any engineer playing, kinda pointless having that duplication.
              7. People dont stop for repairs as they dont think you will stop to assist them, a 'repairs here' message would help. As it is you have to go out and find your jobs which isnt so easy when you are in the mood to be helpful, medics have static people and symbols to guide them, engineer has a symbol on a tank doing 40 past them (all tanks need repair as whilst they can withstand a few missiles any rough terrain is a no no).

Extra toys wise all it needs is the ability to unrepair, that would add alot to the class without altering the balance of the game.

Engineer is boiling down to be my favorite kit lately.

                1. GREAT AT abilities. (run jump on tank and throw mine on it)

                2. GREAT AP abilities with the Pump shotgun. The Saiga sucks but the M11 and the Chinese one kick butt.

                3. The pistol takes care of people at long ranges on occasion.

                4. still have grenades.

                5. can fix stuff while in armor convoy.

I just REALLY want some AP mines. I want bouncing betty's back so bad

I seem to remember seeing info on the upcoming patch stating you can still throw grenades while jumping. This might be bad info though, or my memory might be slipping, but still...

They seemed to say you could start throwing before jumping and still get the added range from the jump.

You can still jump toss nades with the patch. As for jump tossing mines - I bet not. I have mixed emotions on that. I like being able to jump toss them from behind cover to get them out on a road - or to get them up on a vehicle because tossing them next to them does not good if they pull off right away. There seems to be an arming timer with the mines. If you put one down, a tank can immediately drive over it without it going off. However if they stand still for a couple seconds, then move - they blow up.

At least when you throw them on them, they take them with them til they are armed, then boom.

Getting rid of the ability to shoot or nade the mines to blow them up will be great. Mines are pointless as road hazzards. I know when I drive tanks and apcs I look for them - when i do spot them I shoot them just before I drive near them - then I have a clear path. No need to shoot them one at a time either because you get the nice chain reaction to clear them all out.

I'm looking forward to the next patch for the fact that now my mines simply can't be blown up...now I can create a roadblock or choke point and defend a flag or area better

The one thing I don't like is that I can't blow up the mines (yes i know) b/c now whenever a tank or apc rolls up on a flag im defending I can usually toss a mine behind or near the vehicle, and then throw a grenade on the ground blowing up the mine and the vehicle too...much better than throwing the mine on top of the vehicle and watching it roll off the side or throwing it behind or in front of the vehicle hoping they'll run over it.

But that's not how the mines were meant to be used so I can accept that.

I consider myself to be an elite engineer and I dont feel unhappy about the changes. The tactics I picked up after the last patch I will continue to use, (except obviously the jump toss) the main one being hiding mines in dark spots on the ground. I will miss the "place mine next to tank and blow it up with grenade" tactic. The key is learning how to place them so that your teammates see them clearly, but enemys dont. I usually take any vehicles that spawn nearby and place them in safe starting spots away from my mines so a teammate does not drive into them by "mistake". Also, I have had greater success placing one mine in a key area instead of blocking off an area with a whole bunch of mines. If the enemy does not see a defense he will be reckless and run into your trap.

So true. This is such a great way to take out *several* armored vehicles capturing a flag at once, and with the added impossibility of tossing the mines in mid-air, that will make them very worthless compared to now.

                              ENGINEER FOREVER!!!

yeah killing someone with a shotgun feels amazing , u should be able to see the ppl flying away when u shoot them :P

about the changes in the next patch.... i hate the idea of not being able to shoot and jump, because of the teamkills and mines that are left behind, i got used to put the mines on top of tanks instead of around them...

so for me that's a really bad idea, about everything else in the patch i think i actualy like it :)

but for me the perfect thing would be having a Nr.4 bolt action rifle as unlock heheh i miss the one shot kills in the head from huge distances i used to make in bf1942 hihihi
