Is EA planning a 64-Bit Patch?

I see alot of people in here with 64-Bit spec's in there sigs, or they tell of how they are building 64-Bit machines.

Me and my freind are going to build 64-Bit computers, Mine is the AMD 4000. He already has his 3200, and he has a 64--bit patch for farcry, with 64-bit windows.

Im going to install 64 Bit windows when i get my processor, and im wondering if EA is going to release a 64-Bit Patch like other Companies are doing?

It would certainly improve performance drastically.

Nothing offical has been announced about such a patch, and no creditiable rumors have been floating around.

I updated to XP 64 edition recently and can't tell a difference between the normal and 64bit games that I've played (HL2 and FC)

According to my friend. who has a 64Bit machine, with 64-bit windows, and 64bit Far Cry, he says its noticable. Do you have the patch installed?

Im not talkin just about graphics here, im talking about smoothness of gameplay. because some 32-Bit games like Call of Duty, wont work properly or poorly on 64-bit O/S.

what exactly is 64bit system/windows? i keep hearing about it, but no clue what it is.

          sorry for being off topic.

I haven't confirmed this myself, but once of the improvements in the 64-bit version of HL2 is supposedly with the responsiveness of the physics engine; if you shoot at a box it should instantly begin destruction instead of having a slight (but noticable) pause before it destructs. As for FarCry, there's an extra pack apart from the 64-bit patch which is meant to improve draw distances and texture quality, provided you're using the 64-bit version.

I've got a AMD64 3200 and was considering going XP-64, but decided against it due to the lack of any major improvement from XP-32, as well as possible conflicts with hardware and/or software. It would be nice to see a 64-bit version of BF2 however, if for no other reason than having longer draw distances and smoother gameplay.

NO EA won't give us a 64bit patch (like you call it) this is lots of work and they don't care about it .

Reason why Valve did it is because Valve is mainly trying (and succeeding) to sell there source engine .

It's very unlikely that it will happen if you ask me.
Sources at DICE have already in the past commented on how relatively fragile the engine is; apparently it was one hell of a ride to get it to work out on both NVidiars and ATI cards the way it does now, in the first place.
A true 64 adaption of the engine would mean a not negligible amount of change, and as such, I don't figure it's very likely.

Also unlikely because 64bit isn't being supported all that much by the general PC community. When people realise that they'll have to go hunting for drivers and may not find all they need (some 2004 Cannon printers won't work properly) they they don't see the point in migrating).

Worst bit about Windows XP X64 was trying to get drivers for peripherals . Nostromo N52 drivers have only recently become available and Wireless Network cards are hit and mess depending on firmware . At the moment , I am running my rig "dual-boot" and have tried BF2 and SF on both (SF gives a warning on install that it has only been tested on 32 bit Windows) and I can see no great performance advantage with the 64 bit rig and 64 bit OS running BF2 .

Some people just don't get it.

You can't expect to throw in a 64 bit processor and a 64bit OS and run a 32 bit program and see some huge performance increase.

Yes, performance will go up slightly, but probably not enough to where your average human idiot 10 year old Bf2 player will see it.

a 32 bit program is not able to use any benefits of a 64 bit machine.

Re: Is EA planning a 64-Bit Patch?

The way 64 bit windows works is any program that is not 64 bit ready is it just puts it in a seprate program files from what I understand and then emulates 32 bit on it.

Heres a little article on it. Although its from June 8, 2005 I don't think much has changed for 64 bit windows.
As for 64-Bit applications, I am still not sold on the fact that a patch will convert it to operate to the full potential, compared to being written from the ground up. In the article, I've used Far Cry 64-Bit and Sandra 64-Bit, both of which didn't show any performance increase over their 32-Bit counterparts. Simply put, there is no reason to want to get the 64-Bit version of the OS, especially since it still has compatability issues, and decreases performance in some tests. Aquamark3, for example, does not work in x64. That's just not worth the ~$170US price tag.

Also on the 64 bit farcry patch acording to these benchmarks the fps is actually a tiny bit lower (not that it would be noticed) but they did add some new visual features.

We'll probably get it at the same time as a dual core patch which is coming between now and apocalypse...

Re: Is EA planning a 64-Bit Patch?

I think its a case of supply and demand, not a great demand for 64bit games until the next gen of Windows arrives which wont be for a while. XP64 bit edition is more for developers to experiment with and to highlight obvious problems (ie lack of drivers) with changing the computing world to 64bit, a long way from being entirely user friendly as yet.
I would rather efforts were put into an entirely new 64bit engine for bf3 rather than a bodge job on the current game simply to satisfy the curious few. All you would achieve with a 64bit patch is the same 32bits as now and 32bits of nothing as you cant change things like physics in the game to take advantage of the extra space (as everything would still have to be in sync with the 32bit version).
At the end of the day 64bit games wont turn you Geforce 256 into a 7800gtx nor will it turn1gig of ram into 2, these are the general bottlenecks of systems rather than the processor.
