Ugh, can't see close textures

Can someone please tell me why everything near to my player is black and things in the distance are viewable?

I know this has been asked, but the answers are vague and haven't helped me. Is there anyone who can suggest the real reason why I can't see the textures? I am getting more and more frustrated and have looked through the bfeditor forums to no avail. There is no clear answer anywhere,

you need to change the "Color" of the terrain under the Brushes thing in Paint Mode.
