    memtest

ok so i ran memtest and it started to pop up an insane ammount of errors...you think this is what is causing me to have problems installing some games and patching?

    Re: memtest

That's for sure. If memtest comes up with errors then your memory is 100% corrupt you will have to get some new RAM. I had it before, though I was lucky to bring them back and replace them with new ones, since mine were new.

        Re: memtest

I wouldn't say 100% currupt. There is an issue with your RAM though, thats for sure. And yes that is most likely what is causing your problem.

For the record, based on what you have done so far, it is in no way "for sure" that your sticks are bad. It could just be that your timings (set in and by BIOS) are too aggressive, or maybe you are not giving them enough voltage, etc., etc.

ya it is not a ram issue..i ripped out old ram in my old system that i know works with everything and well i got the same errors and ****..how do i go abotu adjusting my stuff in BIOS and what should i set timings as..i know voltage should be 2.6-2.8 volts... Im running a 500 watt power supply.

                      Re: memtest

Depends on many factors: CPU brand, MB, memory brand, etc.

If you have some prefabbed workstation (like a DELL for instance), you may not even be able to adjust things. Assuming you can see a page in your BIOS settings that deal with RAM timings (typically the page is called "Cell Menu"), you might just start off setting everything to AUTO, or, for that page, "Load Fail-Safe Defaults."

That will pretty much guarantee that the RAM timings will be more than slow enough. The problem with most, if not all, BIOS's is that the default DDR RAM voltage gets set to 2.5V, and many DDR sticks actually require more voltage. You'll need to check your particular memory's datasheet for what it's rated at. Setting it to 2.7 V is generally safe.

So with the timings set to AUTO and the voltage manually set to 2.7 V (BE SURE TO CHECK THE DATASHEET FIRST!!!), run memtest again. If it still can't even pass once, then your CPU may be faulty (i.e., for Athlon 64 CPUs, the memory controller is actually in the CPU), or if you are using an Intel or non-Athlon64, your chipset may be faulty which translates to your motherboard is faulty, etc., etc.

I am not running a dell...I order my system off www.cyberpowerinc.comI'll looki into the voltage settings and I'll set it to auto to see if that helps.
