Crazy Idea: Units able to drop GPS and Radio for 'invisibility' on enemy radar.

I've had the craziest... but seemingly viable idea come to me when I was in the shower... of all places.

I had an idea for SpecOps units (or maybe any other units who wish to) - where they are able to disable and not carry GPS and radio - and REALLY become SpecOps- where, because they no longer have GPS and radio; they won't pop up on enemy radar and minimap, but they will also not have the ability to see anything else other than just their own map and their own squad on the map.

That way, if an enemy spots them, they're dead meat - so they really have to remain hidden and kill discretely and quickly and operate the way a special operations should.

They will only show up on enemy radar- for a shorter time when spotted, and will only be spotted on enemy satellite scan if they are moving.

Those Spec Ops will not have radio contact so they cannot call for help. And since their GPS is disabled- they really must focus on objectives and work as a squad to accomplish those objectives- like destroying commander assets, vehicles, and perhaps even take out key targets like snipers and the commander...

Perhaps when the squad leader of the silent SpecOps squad is at their base scan-radar facility (the radar array that spins around), might be able to use the satellite scan to seek out those key targets, or even use the commander map to have a look around the enemy base to do that.

Not only will Spec Ops will have a more vital role in BF2 other than just a foot-soldier with plastic explosives, it will make the game much much more interesting and also can balance out issues such as spawn-camping and such (perhaps SpecOps can also carry weapon of choice, that is balanced out by different equipment/weapon values- so if they want to carry Anti-tank missile- they must forego their C4 and frag grenades, or even their primary gun, and etc for other kit items).

Okay... now that I've given some food for thought... what does everyone viewing this thread think? Give me your input/opinions/criticizms/ and ideas... don't be annoying and post something like "You're Stupid" with nothing else to offer.

Even if it may be a long-shot in terms of feasibility- we can all have a dream, can't we? And perhaps with enough persuasion- DICE and EA can help make such come true

By 'no radio' you mean no VoIP ?

Pretty much- no radio or any communications whatsoever- except for with your own squad of silent SpecOps - VoIP will only work within your squad perhaps, but no 'Q' or 'T' key communications with anyone else except your squad.

Perhaps exceptions could be made to be able to talk to the commander in order to get orders and reporting in.

Say ALL and Say Team (J and K keys) will have to be disabled :P

BTW, thanks for posting your input and even questions is greatly appreciated.

I think when you said you got this idea in the shower, of all places, it must have came to you when you woke up after hitting your head after slipping on the soap.

LOL... Very constructive Bram_Toker :P... I take it you don't like the idea :p. It does sound extremely far-fetched, but I was thinking how awfully cool it would be if it were true. And it definately WOULD make BF2 more interesting... perhaps we'll see more Spec Ops out there, perhaps too much :|:

I wouldn't mind if people posted with a bit of an open mind :)

Plus... I've never slipped in the shower... (or so I think...), but don't you think the bathroom is a place of many inspirations and epiphanies? not only do we sing so well and so confidently while we're either sitting on the can or having a rinse-down, but some of the greatest ideas and thoughts come to us there too.

Kinda cool idea, but I have a few problems. You said that no one could see you on sat scan unless you were moving, but how would you know when he's scanning, and when to move/not move?

Also, if specops were given these abilities, I think they'd have to seriously change the kit. Maybe make it to where if you select the G36/SCAR-L , then you get the regular spec ops w/o the special abilities. If you pick a weaker gun like the M4, then you can get the stealth abilities. I dunno, just seems like a sneeky spec ops w/ a powerhouse of a gun like the g36/scar-l would just lead to specops whoring.

That sounds awesome, but I've got a few gripes.

As Systems said, we really don't need more people playing Spec Ops. Or Sniper... and those are the only classes who it really makes sense for. I'd have to say, let anybody.

Also, this is far beyond the realms of EA's comfort zone. They'd never do the work (which involves balancing etc.), and they'd never want such a big change, and if they did, it'd be in an expansion pack, and they missed their opportunity (Special Forces).

Hmm, by the way, I think Spec Ops carbines should be silenced. We also need a silenced sniper rifle.

Okay, well- I suppose the whole customizable kit idea is a whole other crazy idea, so we'll drop that, perhaps until someone or me comes up with a thread addressing that. G36C isn't all that powerful, but it is indeed accurate. Perhaps 1 or 2 more C4 charges to go along with the 'silent' SpecOps; smoke grenades would be an awesome addition - for those all too important 'hasty retreats' when spotted. As with the scanning thing... I suppose you don't know if the enemy commander is scanning- thus it would be imperative to take out the enemy scan-radar ASAP

Another idea... if you've played BF Vietnam- you can choose a 'kit' or 'class' but you can choose which 'set' of equipment and weapons to use. What if that could be implemented for ALL kits in BF2?

As with specops whoring, well- for one, you need to belong to a squad; and if you go off doing your own thing, you'll technically be AWOL and be kicked off the squad :P Just remember- the 'Silent' SpecOps cannot really participate intensively in the main theatre of war- lest they all be eliminated by enemy forces and start from scratch. (they don't have GPS, remember? so they are technically blind to the battlefield - even if the commander uses UAV, they will not be able to see it).

Well... because of the GPS limitations- their capacity to 'sight and kill' is less; so they'll have to take that into regard- either become the primary participant on the field, or become a specialised unit which have been assigned to a particular purpose, with its benefits but with pitfalls as well. Once the 'Silent' SpecOps have achieved their objectives- like destroying assets and etc (and perhaps more than normal points are awarded for accomplishing)- it is more than likely that the enemy commander knows what had happened and will have to divert some of the effort attention to hunting down the 'Silent' SpecOps... just an extra element in the game to make it more interesting, rather than the linear and primitive concepts of base-raping, spawn camping, etc- which had made BF2 so predictable. Not only will there be something to deal with base raping and spawn camping, but those base-rapists and spawn campers will also have something to deal with as well (perhaps if they have become the primary focus of the silent spec-ops.) However, this idea was not just devised to deal with spawn campers and base rapists - it's to add another element and dimenstion to BF2.

Silenced guns are great I reckon- imagine how terrifying it is to hear silenced gunfire somewhere very close in your vicinity and seeing those team-mates in your vicinity disappear from your minimap... you know your doom is impending- and you can only wait for someone to pop out of nowhere and knife you. Plus silencers will definately be one of the things that'll also make Silent SpecOps 'Silent' as well.

As with- whether EA can do it or not... stuff them- maybe a mod can be created... if not, I suppose EA could do something about it if they really like the idea... who knows?

hmm, I would think the Specops would be more of a Lone Wolf than anything else, especially since hes working by himself.... lol, the lonewolf isn't there just for noobs!

Not really falling for this, although I think i see where you are going.

And not one to spout the RL vs Game issue. SF units still carry GPS (Cant get a fix on a GPS that doesnt broadcast a signal of it's own... so they would still be invisible while carrying one - Hell a civilian Garmin GPS doesnt broadcast (Unless you get one of the Rhino 110/120/130s)

And no radio? SATCOM, VSAT, and a whole host of others that can be used and not tracked/pinpointed.

Well... for one- it's just an idea so far. As with VoIP- I know that VoIP contributes for greater teamwork and efficiency and effectiveness. I once played in a squad where the squadleader not only was able to lead so incredibly well and look after us all squad members- he even started singing to us... which was cringe-worthy, but funny all the same.

For those who do use it has a great advantage- because it means you don't have to fiddle around with the Q and T keys all the time, or have to type in your own message. There ARE people who use VoIP.

Well, there you go - perhaps they CAN have GPS and radio communication then... I think a team effort being SpecOps is better than going lone-wolf though, after all- you never have enough charges to destroy ALL the commander assets.
