Game goes to load screen then jumps back to desktop

I have been having this problem recently, after formating my comp and reinstalling bf2. Im sorry if there were other posts on this subject, but i looked everywhere and ppl are all saying different solutions that dont work.

BF2 ran perfect before i formated, i think it was a combination of the correct driver anyways,

comp specs:

AMD Athalon XP 3.4 gig
ATI 256 MB ATI radeon 9800 pro
1 gig ram

EA suggests using the latest driver from ati, other people have suggested older versions. If someone has a solution please help.

I would start by downloading Omega drivers. Some people hate them, others love them. I like them because they work really well for me. I had a 9800 Pro card too and those drivers were just right for that card.
However, I noticed that the 2.6.83 were the best ones for me. The new ones are the 2.6.87 and they caused a lot of stuttering and practically made the game unplayable.
-Uninstall your current drivers with everything that is ATI related.
-Get the 2.6.83 from omega and install them.
-Set your in game resolution to 1152x864
-Adjust your in game setting to the same as before the reformat.

This should work, let me know if it does not, I can offer you some additional tips.

Which patch are u running? With BF2 installed an un patched the game will run, as soon as I add a patch it causes the problem. I will give the omega drivers a shot.
