BFG 6600OCGT + 512 RAM: Good enuff?

I'm trying to upgrade my pc:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
512 PC3200 RAM
WinXP PRO SP 1
Asus A7N8X deluxe PCB 1 Rev 1
BFG 6600OCGT 128RAM AGP

Just wondering if you really really need 1GB to play the game. I don't care much if the ALL the textures or bling-blings are there or not.

You don't NEED it, but it does make all the diffrence in the world. With as cheap as RAM is there is really no reason not to have 1GB.

Hey mate, what are you upgrading to. Your processor is way to weak, you at least need a processor upgrade before thinking about extra memory. I would suggest:

S939 Motherboard
64 Bit AMD 3200+
1 GB 3200
6600GT 256 MB

You will enjoy Battlefield 2 at its max settings up to 1280*960 at a good framerate. Use the tweaksrus drivers: 77.62b

Its an older board that I'm trying to max the updates, very slowly.
At the time of purchase of BFG 6600OCGT, its the max I can place on this AGP board. I believe its a Socket A CPU Type board, so CPU availability is limited so I guess 1800+ (accdg to CPUZ/ 2400+ accdg to DXDIAG). And at the time, I had a $300 budget only.
So I went bigget cut on the PSU---600W SilverStone STRIDER, then remaining on the 6600OCGT.

When I do save up around $200, I'll be able to afford at least 2GB. You see I'm stuck with this mobo's dual channel requirement. There's 3 slots for the memory. I can't go 2x256 on two slots, then one 512 on the 3rd slot.
Or can I? I'll have to research it some more.

I'm "leap-frogging" my upgrades. Hope that make sense. I'm upgrading my lower end to leap frog my High-end....hence I got a 600PSU for future upgrades.

I guess basically my question-concentration is on the low end, how I can max this system to leap frog the SLI.
I know about the 7800GS AGP. I'm holding my breath on that one.

ledanek, if its a dual channel mobo, i think you need to have multiples of 2 for the dual channel to work. If you have 3 slots, thats only single channel. IF you have dual channel, it is possible to run 256mb and 512mb together given your ram timings are the same. Since ram is cheap, it isnt that bad of a choice to get both 512 and make it 1gb. Some mobo will allow you to run 3 ram out of 4 slots, and they will be default as single channel. But some mobo will crash. So beware.

and by leap froging you mean u want to have ur current surpass the performance of an sli comp? If thats the case, good luck... Maybe with a 6800U you might be able to beat 6600gt sli. And 7800gs is just a rumor that they might launch it. Most likely they would just scrap that idea in the end since most people are converting over to pci-e already. The left overs consist of low end gamers which they will be using maybe 6200 or something. IF they launch 7800gs, that would be a limited edition one (just like the 2 gpu asus video card that they made).

My advice is just stick with what you have now, save up ur money for a year. Then get a new pc with pci-e mobo and then start doing stuff to it.

I know there's more ppl out there that are still on AGP, vs ppl on PCI-E.
I not sure if they are struggling to keep up, but this would give these ppl hope or option.

The best CPU you can put on the mobo with an A socket it alot better than the current one you have. You can get a AMD Semperon/Athlon A socket 3000+. Thats the top the A socket goes. (The highest i have seen for sale though is the 2800+).

BF2 would run alot better with 1 GB of RAM than it does with 512 MB. I would reccomed either you buy 2x 1GB RAM or 1x 1Gb or RAM, this leaves you with the best for the furute and more upgrading down the track. I would not use 2x256 and the 1x 512 RAM, miss-matching RAM is never a good idea.
