In heli battles with good pilots height generally wins the battle.
No, that only counts for the noob-style dogfighting of "DESPERATELY TRING TO GET ABOVE YOU SO MY MISSILES WORK OUT" in my opinion.
With good pilots in the helis, there IS no battle, because they use surprise to their advantage.

Thats your opinion but i definatly wouldnt class myself as a noob pilot. If a helicopter is infront of us and doesnt know we are here then sure we will send in a TV missile, but the generally see you at the same time you get to see them, also if they start attacking you then course you cant go for the suprise attack.

Also the reason for wanting to be above the other chopper is because the gunner cant shoot up very much and at low altitude you cant tilt ur nose up for long to launce missiles.

PS. what tag do you play BF2 under?

I never meant to call you a noob of course, but generally your gunner should take out the chopper before he even sees you.
When he sees you, get the hell out of his view. When he goes searching for you, then, he's even easier to take out, because he will turn a lot.
I never do the boring dogfight thing anymore, I just take them out from the distance, if it doesn't work, I zoom away and hide, then repeat.

Not being funny but you wont loose a good pilot no matter how good you flt. I also cant see how dog fights are boring, they are over in 5-20 seconds depending how good the enemy pilot is.

You were probably asking to learn about my chopper stats, so: 3.13 k/d as a pilot, about 90 flight hours, 3700 (last time i checked) kills.
Most deaths occur when I'm in the back of a Z-8, trying to shoot AT rockets from the back hatch, but it's so much fun (Has anyone got any tips on where to exactly hit an attack chopper with the AT missile to shoot the pilot out? It's cost me insane amounts of death in the Z-8 trying to find that out in mid-air).

Nice stats, I searched for your user name and it came up with someone with 8 helicopter kills and I was wondering how I could have could have a conversation with someone about how to fly a chopper if they had 8 kills lol :)

I apreciate that the supprise attack is best, but when your gunner only realised that you actually have to click to change the flight direction of the TV missiles!!! the other day it hasnt been so easy in the past. He used to launch them and then move the mouse to where he wanted it and not click, funny enough it didnt work out too well generally. Thats why we used to have to dog fight a lot but that is changing slowly.

Sometimes you are forced into dogfights and can't do anything about it.
Also, some people genuinely enjoy them.
                    Whetever floats your boat.
I like to get the enemy chopper out of the way without sustaining damage if possible, so I can go hunt armor and bombers.
If your gunner just uses it ballistically () you can try to use it to your "advantage" by trying and leading a lot and then yelling at him to fire. Sometimes it works out :)

                      I.e. baserape?

In a public game you will meet people head on in helicopters unless you're only concentrating on keeping them down. Height will make it less likely that you are spotted it will also make the enemy less likely to sneak up on you.

I deem that you are talking out of your ass.

                        Deem whatever you want.

However, you can also simply take them out as they leave the base from afar (TV missile reaches well 600m, that is more than any view range there is). That isn't baserape, because neither of us is in their base; They won't spot me because I'm 600 metres away; It takes me maybe two seconds of attention to turn my chopper and let the gunner fire. Then I have time to destroy armor until the enemy chopper respawns and leaves the base again.
                        Lather, rinse, repeat.

And I hate all those wannabe pilots who fly low. Absolutelly useless.

Why, exactly, should pilots be flying low? How is "visible" chopper a sitting duck?

When I fly with my gunner (or fly/gun alone), AA vehicle will last at most 5 seconds after the AA lock. Jeeps might last bit longer, until I find them. Jets will see me and attack me, but I'll either evade, or shoot them down (or at least damage them badly and buy 15-20 seconds of 'peace'). When good plane pilot is in the air, he'll get me (or damage me real bad) no matter if I fly low or high.

From "up there", I have better visibility, and TV missiles can be launched immediately in directions where armor/vehicles/choppers are spotted, and get them.

When pilots fly low, I see only ground, and can't shoot anything.

I can't understand, for the life of me, why so many people can't understand and use the full power of attack choppers. Hiding is NOT one of its strong points. I've seen so many times people running out of vehicles and hiding when they see chopper coming their way (after they experienced it for 5-10 minutes). Why should I hide?

If someone spots enemy chopper that flies "low" and hides, you think TV won't get them? I have rarely seen chopper that can hide itself fully, without having parts exposed. You can try to hide behind a building/tree, but TV can be extremely maneuvarable. You might think you're hidden, but from "up there", I can see your tail/rotor without problems, even if your cockpit is next to a tree.

Real "sitting duck" is an attack chopper that caps flags. I enjoy taking them out with TVs, from distance, more than anything. Oh well, only plane shot down feels sweeter

wow i just read all you guys post and cant believe this...
im not really going to comment but you have to do EVERYTHING to be good ... i.e low high mid high... everything.. you have to be flexible!
i can dodge your tv missle so easy and get away from a lock so easy!
i barely hide but when i do im good at it! and if i need to get out of there im giood at it!
                            it just takes practice!
learn how your chopper operates and its lift and drop ratio then you knwo how to control your movements well!
so.. see me in a server ask me and ill duel you... my gunner vs yours or no gunner at all whatever your jam!

Of course you can do that but it's lame, boring and most pilots/gunners aren't a threat. You can fly around killing ground troops and do a 360 sweep now and then. Much more fun and much more productive. It's only when the opposing gunner is good you need to play cat and mouse. I'm well aware that the current range of the wire guided is 600 meters.

You might want to take a look at my gunner to see if I know how to fly *HMC*Alven is his ingame handle. (bring on the stats fight!)

Shrug, I saw this thread as a discussion of techniques, not dicksize comparison.

When soloing I obviously stay higher.
Also when with strangers as gunners.
When with friends, I know that they need no visual contact with targets before firing and allow myself the luxury of buzzing around behind cover, raising my nose whenever they're reloaded.

Of course you can do that but it's lame, boring and most pilots/gunners aren't a threat
Most enemy helicopters aren't a threat to you and me, the pilots. They are however a threat to the rest of the team, so I nip them in the bud before they do any damage to my teammates.

You can fly around killing ground troops and do a 360 sweep now and then. Much more fun and much more productive.
Shrug, I do that every now and then, but only if it absolutely needs be, or if I happen upon them, or if my team has trouble with a sniper. Otherwise, I leave the infantry to my team, because infantry is usually the smallest of all threats to my teammates.

Just a different philosophy I guess.
