Perfect Armored Squad : ideas ?

I've been fiddling with some ideas about how friends and I should organize our squad when playing together.

Today I'd like to discuss with you ideas for a good 4 / 5 men armored squad.

Here are my proposals and I'm waiting to hear from you :

    4-men Armored squad :
    • Point vehicle : Main Battle Tank (Driver : Engineer / Turret : Medic)
    • Rear vehicle : APC (Driver : Engineer Squad Leader / Crew : Support)
    • Use / Pro & Cons : The point vehicle is there to soak damages. The tandem of Engineer drivers ensures higher surviral rates for both vehicles. The rear vehicle can replenish the MBT ammo and at the same time the MBT Medic can heal the supporting forces covering the MBT. When facing armor, the combined MBT and APC firepower can overcome a single vehicle pretty fast. The APC can also cover the flank of the MBT with it gun turret to deter C4 / Mine attacks. When the Medic in the MBT turret dies (as turret crew tends to) he can respawn into the Squadleader APC and then walk back to the tank when the situation permits. Or he can respawn as Assault/AT for additional punch to clear the way.
    5/6 men Armored squad :
    • Point vehicle : Main Battle Tank (Driver : Engineer / Turret : Medic)
    • Rear vehicle : APC (Driver : Engineer Squad Leader / Crew : Support / AntiTank / AntiTank)
    • Use / Pro & Cons : Same as above. But the 5th/6th squad members are used as 'sidekick' AT forces. As soon as the Armored squad is facing enemy vehicles or a strong point, the 5th/6th crewmembers exit the APC and fire their AT Rocket. 1 MBT plus 1 APC and 1 or 2 AT Rocket should be enough to dispose of even 1 or even 2 enemy armored vehicles in seconds. More over the nearby MBT Medic can provide healing to the exposed AT Troopers.
I've seen the AT-Troopers-in-APC tactic used to great effect and I have occasionally boarded an APC as an AT trooper crew with my AT rocket launcher as my selected weapon. As soon as I would hear the Missile lock threat warning or if I hear the driver firing gun & rockets I would exit the APC and search for a target and Fire!!! Twice it landed our APC/AT Trooper tandem with fast kills. Usually against another APC. Both APC drivers are too focused on trying to kill each other. Either the enemy APC/Tank try to kill the APC and he gets killed by the AT Troopers or he tries to kills the AT Troopers and he gets killed by the APC.

    Your remarks / ideas ?

I Will try to start another thread on similar ideas for Mechanized, Infiltration, Defense, Attack squads if you find this kind of things interesting.

As long as you have flank support from bunny hopping C4 chuckers...

I'll try to get my other -=|MiF|=- buddies to try this out in the coming days. This should work pretty well on maps like Zhonghua, Oman or Kubra. On Karkhand, we have more to fear from Infantry.

It's pretty evident that to work properly the squad must use VOIP or TeamSpeak (or eqv).

My armor squads look like this:

            "Iron Fist" Configuration

-MBT first, atleast one engineer. May have medic as driver and engineer in turret, or two engineers. Attacks any target, soft or hard, he can.
-APC(s) second, engineer. Attacks any target he can, assisting with hard targets first, then infantry (duh)
-AA third, if possible. Support. Attacks air targets (duh) and assists with soft targets.
Very hard to pull off if you have no VOIP communication, because target designation needs to be flawless to avoid death by C4.
During capture processes, tankist goes into external views (specops monitor), APC internal to address incoming light vehicles.

            "Iron Head" Configuration

-APC first, engineer. Fires his TOW at hard targets, then attacks only soft targets.
-MBT second, at least one engineer. Attacks hard targets, then assists soft targets if necessary.
If available: -Other APC(s) third, engineers
-AA fourth, support. Attacks air, helps with soft targets.
Easiest config, because target designation is clear: APC fires TOW, pulls back and mows infantry. Tank shoots hard target to shred, then helps with infantry. AA gazes into the sky and wonders wtf is going on.

            "Tank Akimbo" Configuration

-MBT x2, engineer, side-by-side go first, attack anything.
-APC(s) second, engineer, attack soft targets and monitor backside
-AA third, support, attack air and assist with soft targets.
when capturing, tanks stand back to back outside the flag zone. MBT #1 external view, MBT #2 internal view for threat assessment as usual. APC(s) and AA go capture, one APC into third person view, AA and (if exist) other APC into first-person.
My favorite configuration, I usually play it on Fushe64. The tankists obviously need to cooperate well to make most of their firepower - timing shots on hard targets is key.

Those squads work also with no APCs and just an AA vehicle, but then the tank needs to have a support guy in the turret, so the AA driver can still go engineer (vital to survival of the squad) without running out of ammo.
They also work with no AA vehicle (ow), especially if the enemy chopper pilot is an idiot.the key then is to stay spread out and move a real lot; especially the tank need to seek to drive up to the chopper when he comes down strafing you with missiles, because then you can turn your cannon 180 and give him a shot in the rear.
If the enemy pilot's any good, he won't strafe you at all but have his gunner use the TV missile and you will be toast without an AA vehicle.
The Tank Akimbo can also work with only two tanks with engineers, but you need to watch your shell count very dearly, pay additional attention to the ground AND the sky at the same time and avoid main flight corridors even more than otherwise.

            "Tag Team" Configuation
-At least two APCs, atleast two engineers, if possible one support.
The strategy here is to never stop. Try to stand 90° to the hostile hard targets and alternatingly race back and forth, so he is under constant fire from alternating vehicles, which means your main cannon will never overheat (because you can always give it short rests) and the damage will be distributed quite evenly over several vehicles that constantly repair each other.
This configuration is easily the funniest one to play if you make use of your additional resources (hint: mines) and is quite effective for both defense and as a moderate speed attack formation. When encountering an enemy armor caravan, however, your best bet is to find a different route, because you will lose against any of the aforementioned configurations if they do their job right.

If you have to make do with one APC and one AA vehicle, you definitely need 3 guys for 2 vehicles (2 engineers, one support), and it will be extremely tough to go up against more than one hard target. All the AA can do, is spam the enemy driver with the main gun and hope that the ensuing shaking and wobbling of the target will buy you enough time to take out the target in due time.

Souds good, but slow moving targets are great for air attacks and Sp ops. You need some on the ground llike a squad leader, because the tank can be blown up before you know it. The key thing is balance in your attack. Once the gunner is shot(the first target for a sniper) then the tank has no defense against the Spec ops or anti tanker nearby. The best tastic I have done is use a tank and marched right through the city while solders where around me. And even if I did get picked off, the soliders could find the enemy and wipe them out.

By the way what is the name of the tank that shoots auto rounds and the one that has the gunner?

One thing about glaucoma's strat I like a bit better is that the Engineer is in the turret and not driving. If I wound up going toe to toe with another tank, I'd prefer having an Engy behind me with a wrench instead of a Medic in my useless gunner seat and hoping I can go lick my wounds myself if I survive. (When repairing, you can protect your tank better by staying in it). With an Engy in the nest, you still get the benefit of autorepairing your APC - plus you're earning driver ability points along the way too. *bonus*

Im just waiting around for mods who will deploy tanks on MASS.

Then im sure it will be like in DC when it could end up with 5 tanks driving together across the desert. That was FUN

I see this post at the very least ellicited some very interesting comment and alternative tactics & setup.

Anybody willing to keep doing this with other kind of squad setups ?

Sorry mate it all depends upon your native language. And I tend to mix it up between French (native), English or other 'local' ways to write it (will check how chineses write Shongua).

                        Lol. You got me !

Any which way you slice it - if you try this on any map with a bomber - I will tell you now - you will be my wet dream in the bomber.

I have seen squads try this on Operation Clean Sweep - and I loved it - 47 consecutive kills until FF got me. 87 kills in all in one round.

Songhua and Karkand are your only options for really trying this.

In Karkand - we usually roll 2APC and One tank at head. Tanker is SL with one member, APCs are seperate squads for spawns on driver. Each driver is ENG - if gunner gets shot out of tank - you don't want to lose the repair for others. Also - if gunner is ENG, he hops out to wrench - then the APCs are not getting wrench and he is bait for splash damage.

Get more engineers and repairs go even faster. You don't have to have support - just get a crate every now and then for ammo. Keep the squad ENG and a couple AT along for the ride to the flag cap. They are the primary cap - armor keeps the perimeter clear. If there is room - they can pull in to help cap a corner.

No. Having to rely on the average (=idiot) commander to drop a crate for you instead of on his toys can be very...frustrating.

Nah. Usually the enemy bomber is a noob who just carpetbombs and doesn't even have a gunner, so if you stay spread, he takes out one of you but that's that.
Also, FuShe and Dragon Valley don't have any bombers, only fighters.
