AI showdown: F.E.A.R Vs. HL2 Vs. Far Cry

What's your favorite? Here's my breakdown for F.E.A.R:

    F.E.A.R: (extreme difficulty was used)

The AI in F.E.A.R is just f'in incredible. They do things that I have not seen any other games do period. They will use the obligatory tactical crap to hide behind things and whatnot, but unlike other games they will actually look for another spot once they realize they are vulnerable where they are at. They will even find another spot when you have retreated for cover to reload to surprise you or even go around and flank you while their squad mates keep you pinned. One of their neat abilities is the way they use grenades. Sure, we've all seen FPS goons chuck nades around but never with the accuracy of the replica dudes in F.E.A.R. They may for instance spot you without you even realizing it and toss a surprise nade at you ending your game immediatly or they will toss a nade to flush you out in the open so their squadmates can destroy you. This is a level of teamwork that is not seen even in online games(pub games anyway).

One thing that really shocked me one day when I was playing the water plant level was when I came upon a replica guard. The guy really surprised me and we were staring at each other for like a half second. As soon as I reacted the guard followed suit and a quick fire fight ensued. It was almost as if he was as confused and as shocked as I was from our meeting. This is the kind of thing I normally only experience in online games when I am not sure if the guy I wanna plug is a teammate or not.

Replica guards use communication to their advantage as well. This is painfully obvious when you play the game though so I won't mention much about it. One thing that is really neat about the AI is the way they detect you. They will use sight, sound, shadows etc to spot you. Busting out a window will cause them to search the area where the glass was broken while loud footsteps on concrete are an easy way to give away your position.

The coolest thing about them though is the way they navigate through the levels. When you first discover a guard, they follow a scripted path. However, when they spot you their AI kicks in and they will search every nook and cranny of the level to put you down. One thing that Monolith really did to raise the bar in AI was keeping them from getting stuck on physics objects and doors. They will use larger physics objects as a cover and contrary to popular belief, these sequences are not scripted. The guards ARE positioned in the appropriate spots to knock over stuff, however I have found through many hours of playing that they will use any useful object they can find for cover once you drag them out from the areas they spawn in. Shame on any developer that has crap AI in their game from now on.

All in all, I believe F.E.A.R has the best AI in any game to date. The level of intelligence in the AI makes it seem like you are playing an online game with real humans. For the power of the AI to be truly realized, you must unbind your slowmo key and play through like a traditional FPS game. The AI is really gimped when you go into slow motion and it sort of ruins the whole thing for me despite how cool it looks and sounds.

I dont know I thought Far Cry was pretty hard. I played on the 2nd difficulty and had to start over many many times.

Btw I think BF2 AI doesnt even rank in for the top 200 lol.

Far Cry is a hard ass game and I have yet to beat it, but I think the main reason it's so damn hard is because you can't save anywhere like most FPS games. Plus the enemies are deadly accurate and can spot you very easily unless you sneak around through the jungle bush like a commando.

FarCry: 2 hits from a trigent kills you. (on normal difficulty) (i regret that i didnt choose easy)
fear: i have only played it on easy, and it's too easy, u dont even need to press slo-mo. the AI is really surprising though, they flank and stuff etc. so my vote for best ai goes for fear, i think.

bf2's ai isn't bad.. talk about bf42 or vietnam and i'll agree about not showing up on top 200. but bf2 bots will request a pickup, and even pick you up when u request one. they heal/repair others etc. and they are more accurate and realistic than older BF bots. they even say sorry when they teamkill.

Of the 3, I've only played FarCry and was totally unimpresed. After reading the reviews and the box, I was really looking forward to multi-player type combat from a single-player game and it just didn't deliver.

Of course I was really ****ed when I paid full price for it only to see it in the discount bin about 2 weeks later.

I haven't seen convincing AI in any game to date, they just do the same predictable stuff every time you play. If you know what they are going to do, its easy to beat them. HL2 was fairly good. FarCry totally suxed, I've seen FarCry bots trying to run through walls !!! BF2 is quite good. Haven't tried FEAR, but I'm not expecting it to be great. Really clever AI is very difficult, most devs dont put it that much effort.

Far Cry rocks. The reason I like it better than the other two is that you have the freedom to run around - not nearly as linear (although you do have certain things you need to accomplish. It's the same reason I enjoy Operation Flashpoint so much.

ok, I have both Farcry and FEAR on my PC and went through a few levels on each and FEAR takes the AI gold! Amazing to watch...Farcry...the guys were just dumb. Half life2 is a BIT better then Farcry.

Yep, you are right. The only way to truly realize the full potential of the AI in F.E.A.R is to set the game to the hardest difficulty level(extreme). The difficulty levels aren't "phony" like other games that only make the enemies harder and resources more scarce, the AI actually behaves differently. Unbinding the slowmo key also helps. Slowmo gives you a HUGE advantage over the AI. In fact, the reason the slowmo feature was added to the game was to balance the difficulty so that players would not be overwhelmed by the incredible AI.

I thought the AI in far cry was good. They were dumb in the sense that they did bizarre movements occasionaly like turning their back while taking fire which as most of you know is one of the hallmark of bad AI. Other than that, it's amazing from a technical aspect that the AI can navigate the huge world of far cry without scripted sequences like most other games while also using trees and such as cover all on their own volition.

                            My opinions:

FarCry: Not really impressed over all.

FEAR: Equally unimpressed but for a few different reasons. While the AI used the terrrain/obstacles better for cover. It became very predictable as to what their actions would be. Cant recall if it was this forum or adifferent one where I explained one instance where I engaged a few guys and a heavy armord guy, ducked back into the doorway. once I reloaded I peeked around the corner and they had taken defensive positions. At this time my wife called me to remind me that I had to pick my daugter up from day care. I left... came back realizing i did not pause the game. Not only hadnt they killed me. They were sitting in the exact location. While I cant really say it is stupid AI. It was nothing ingenious. Attempts were made to flank, but in saving a postition and going back to see how they reacted to me doing something different found that the ones who I thought were flanking my position previously went the same way the next time despite my doing somethng different. So not sure if it was a programed reaction on it's part or a true flank maneuver.

HL2: Liked it but it was the same. Just keep comming once triggered their react mode.
