i have 2 PC's which both run on XP. PC1 is connected the the internet via broadband. PC1 and PC2 are both connected to each other via a usb crossover cable. i can play MP games on both PC's usin LAN no probs.

me and my mate fancy playin BF2 online using both PC's. so can PC2 connect to the net using PC1's broadband connection via the LAN connection? im told the easiest way is to use a router but thats not an option right now. ive also been told theres another way to do it by usin PC1 as a gateway.

anyone know how?

There is a feature called Internet Connection Sharing in XP, easy to use and setup.

On PC1 that has the Inet connection, run the the network wizard that is in the Network Tasks to the right in the Network Connections window.

Set PC1 up and select the option so it is connected directly to the Internet and other PCs connect throught that.

On PC2 run the same wizard, but select it connect through otehr PC and/or residential gateway.

The PC1 will get a public IP on its Internet connected LAN adapter, and on second LAN adapter, which in your case is the USB LAN, it will get a IP 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0

PC2 will then try and get an IP from PC1, in the range of 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 and subnet 255.255.255.0

Furthermore PC2 will get gateway and DNS in TCP/IP settings as 192.168.0.1 because it connects through it.

All this is done automatically if you use the guides/wizards but can also be setup manually.

I'll try and find some online guides for you to look through.

ok im up to the point hat ive ran the network wizard on both PC's. after that im stuck. im not much of a tech head so what do i need to do after ive ran the wizards?

Make sure that both PC1's USB network adapter has..

IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.255.0

and that PC2 has

IP:192.168.0.xxx (xxx = 2-254)
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Dns: 192.168.0.1

PC1 should have its IP set by the wizards, and PC2 should have its IP and config automatically from PC1. (if not you can set it like metioned above yourself, that will do just as well)

You can check this in a cmd prompt, cmd.exe in Run menu.

Then type ipconfig /all on both machines.

If it works you should be able to access the Internet from PC2 (via PC1)

what have i not done? should it be automatic or should i do somethin manually?
