Now, I know I'd probably get tied up and stoned to death for saying I turn VIOP off when playing BF2. So let me first clarify that I don't. However, I'm starting to use it less and less, sometimes leaving a squad when I hear someone speaking unless it is clear what they are saying is really useful. Why? Here are my 4 main reason:
1. Plenty of people in squads just use VOIP for casual conversation. This is distracting, and takes away the immersion of the game. Even when they are saying useful things, it's usually in a really casual voice. I don't want to sound like one of those role-playing geeks either by screaming "THEY'VE GOT US SURROUNDED, WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!", but I'd much rather hear the semi-over casual DICE voice acting than someone saying "*yawn* Oh yeah, let's uh...go over to the hotel guys."
2. More than half the time people on VOIP are really hard to understand. Either their microphone is too close to their mouth, they have their volume too low, or far too high, or, worst of all have a really thick accent from some country/part of the UK I probably don't even know exists. The first 3 can be really tedious to deal with (as it usually takes awhile, and they probably get frustrated even though they don't show it), but the 4th is pretty much unsolvable. What am I supposed to say? "Hey, drop the Gonnaslavian accent, would you? I can only understand proper English." Even if they aren't offended, you can't send them to speech class and get them back in time before the round ends.
3. I never say anything useful on VOIP, despite my best efforts. 90% of the time I just say something like "hostiles at the hotel" and then forget to spot them so the WHOLE team can know EXACTLY where they are instead of my squad just getting a vague idea. DICE did a great job with the comm rose. Not to mention I have a really hard time explaining myself quickly, so I might say something like "Enemy sniper by the uhhh.....ummmm... construction....3rd level....uh....to the nor-" BOOM 1337Snipa[m95]puglous
4. I tend to be able to use teamwork without VOIP. For example, if I see someone snipers behind cover and I'm a medic, I don't need to be told "wait here with me and revive me when I go down." I'll do it myself. I even remember an instance on Mashtuur when I and 4 others were pinned down by a tank. Using a clever combination of smoke bombs and well placed medics, we were able to escape alive, without a single VOIP command. Chat built in to the game like "throwing smoke" and "let's move" combined with instinctual "mind reading" capabilities humans have allowed us to get out alive.
Let the flames begin!

, except when i accidently press 'V' instead of 'B'. Those commanders really do get annoyed.
